Lie with your neck on a tennis ball and roll it around a little till it feels goooood, physio or HTFU.

Have woken up with same problem a few times, found to go back to bed sleep it off making sure set pillow in a comfortable for my head. Has worked but if persist the next day would say more then just a slept incorrect problem.
Docs then physio would be my plan of attack.
Everyone will probably say different but it's Phsyio for me. Relaxes the muscles which then let go and let the spine assume it's normal position again, releasing the subluxation. I've also found even doing nothing works (over a longer period of time of course) as the body seems to have it's own way of natural healing and restoring balance and normality.
Did that in highschool. From memory it was just painkillers and lie down for a couple of days. Might have been anti-inflammatories too? Just have to wait it out I think. Gradually gets less bad and less easy to set off.
Sympathies buddy, I still remember that pain shooting through my whole body at the slightest movement of my head. You got someone there to help you out?

I don't know what suburb the PSB sweatshop is in but these people keep my occasionally reoccurring neck nerve problem in check.

NB Callum is the owner masseuse, but I found Phil (who fills in/helps out) to be better
Don't kid yourself for a gentle relaxing massage, this will hurt but you will feel better tomorrow if they think they can help.

if its really bad
immobilization, flat on back. LOTS of tiger balm applied 3 times a day, i will use a tea towel stop the stuff contaminating pillow cases. nurofen has become popular as an anti imflammatery but i like panadeine forte for its strong pain relieving properties myself, strong pain causes the muscles to tighten up so i find the pain killing properties works as a muscle relaxant. i can usually recover a pinched nerve enough to work within a day with that method if i have to.

I've got the same problem, its not as bad but it still really hurts to move my head, i might have to have a look at doing what BERT said.
Bert how much was it for one treatment?
Physio, physio, physio. Oh, and did I mention Physio. Especially if you have business trips to do it will get better quicker if you use a Physio.
This happened to me a while ago and it was very painful. Physio will hurt, but will release the muscles that are tensing up and it will get better. You may find that it is not the muscles in the neck causing the issue even though that is where the pain is, and they may need to release a muscle in your arm or your back first. A good physio can do amazing things.

I would suggest doctors and physio.
Doc should give you a prescription for some muscle relaxants which will ease the pain fairly quickly.
Your neck pain could be the cause of a trapped nerve in the spine (happened to me) so it's worth going to the docs to get checked out.

In my experience - Physio.
Naturally, at the slightest inbalance, muscles in your neck and around your spine seize up to protect whatever is out of whack. Bit of deep tissue massage normally releases the muscles and subsequently the trapped nerve. Had this a couple times myself.
As Bert said, the massage might hurt a little but it sure feels a hell of a lot better once your done!
Just went to the physio after a beach accident week before last - massaged the muscles to jelly, felt so good. Private health insurance covered some, final cost ~$50.

My wife is a Massage Therapist, and she sent me straight to the Physio for this. Massage can sometimes send the muscles into spasm and make them worse. Physio's might use massage as a technique but they have other tools that they use too.

I get this problem a lot. I used to get massages once a week but it was getting expensive. I tried physio for a couple months, which seemed to make things worse....as in, I would get muscle spasms more often.
Started seeing a chiro a few weeks ago to sort out why I keep getting headaches. I happened to have a crooked neck when I went in which I briefly mentioned in passing. That sort of thing I'm used to....usually takes me a week or 2 to sleep it off.
By the end of the session, it was gone. I dunno what he did, but in the space of a few seconds I could feel it had disappeared completely. The guy is brilliant. I've now seen him for 5 sessions and my back and neck are well on their way to getting better. His name is Lance Bramley and works from Wembley.
