Apparently yes. I think the only shrinked down thing is the blu-ray laser which was obviously mammoth in the older units.

Local price = $499 according to here: Sony rolling out cheaper slim Playstation 3 | News | News.com.au (not $370).

So we're about the same as the Europeans, but a lot more than the damn yanks.

Is it possible to simply run the power through a 240->115 stepdown unit and buy all your games NTSC through fleabay etc?

Games from any region will play anywhere. I think the power supply accepts 240v, you just need a new power cable.

My jap power is fine I just use a normal travel adapter and no problems so far.

Yep, we always get screwed in relation to these things... Generally speaking, Europe is a lot worse off than us in terms of exchange rate.
