I don't think there is a more entertaining or masterful batting lineup in test cricket than the Indian one at the moment. Even at the height of ours around the turn of the century I don't think it had as much class. Deeper, certainly, but I don't think our top 6 was better.

Ahk. Fractionating should keep those out quite effectively. Interested as to why you say that activated carbon wouldn't be effective?

Well, maybe there's a myth you can dispel here, or maybe it's something you can learn (I'd be interested to find out either way). Guys from three brew shops have said the same thing, though, and practical tests are inconclusive.

Slow percolation of the spirit through activated carbon (at least 60 min exposure) filters out a lot of the less pleasant aromatics when the spirit is < about 60%. 40% seems about most effective. High concentrations of ethanol seem to hang onto things more effectively (ie the filtration becomes less effective) and, so say these guys who should know, you get up over 60-80% and the process tends to reverse, ie the ethanol starts leaching other shit out of the carbon instead of leaving it behind.

As for fractionating - problem is a heap of the aromatics tend to have a bp etc similar to ethanol, so it's really hard to avoid them coming along for the ride with a basic reflux process.
