    Resume help

    Hi all!

As some of u know I was made redundant last week and I am trying to update my resume but having some difficulty. I liked the way my original one was set out but have been advised to add more but I think it's too much for a resume. It looks like an essay. So I've tried to combine the 2 but I need all the help I can get at the moment.

So if u have any ideas or anything really that might help plz let me know!

Hey Rider, do H.R. still take notice of referee's? Way back when I was told for the most part they just like seeing you jot some down but for references they call up people you put down in your work history instead. Was I fed a whole load of BS?

Everytime we've hired at my workplace, the referees have been contacted, HTH.

We always contacted referees. Mine have always been contacted too. I wouldn't call someone the applicant hasn't consented to, but at the same time - I'd get a little concerned if their referees were Bob from the local pub and Bill from the local deli and none were from recent places of employment.

I personally used to bin a resume that had too much writing in it. It's meant to be a summary. You expand upon it at interview. If it's an essay, I'm sorry - I don't have time for that. Same if it's cluttered or difficult to read - binned.

If you want me to have a look at it I'd be happy to Elise, or I can let you look mine over too if you'd like.

Most ppl will want references and will contact them main reason is to cover their arse.

I done references for 99% of then candidates that were placed. In last year and a half i had one candidate that was placed without a reference check and thats because the client said ''dont worry about it, he is right''

You have to seek promision from the candidate before you contact their referees. You also are NOT allowed to give out a bad reference YOU can refuse to provide a reference and just confirm that the candidate has been employed.

AS for referees there is not point contacting people that the candidate hasnt reported to. Or personal references

I dont mind doing references as its a good source of potential clients and candidates.

Hence why I used it as another way to cull resumes. If you can't give me a referee from a recent employer I assume there's a reason you are no longer on good terms. Again - binned. Personal referees are a total waste of ink. No employer with half a brain would even bother to call them.

You will find that lot of snr candidates do not have refereee listed and they will not provide you with referees unless there is an strong interest from the employer.Which is fair enough as their referee are very busy people and they dont like to be bothered .

Most of these employers will offer a contract of employment which is subject to satistactory references.

It all really depands if you are looking at someone to unload a container of cat food for a day you might not bother with a reference BUT if you are looking for someone to run a 100M project which can make or break your company you will most def want some references.

Bining CV can be done now BUT a year ago was another story

cheers for the feedback... I better start including them again. Last few years ive just had 'referees available on request'... but like you said, there was a skills shortage back then and most managers were busy with other shit...

Hey Elise Just make sure you got all the information on there and its set out clearly. There is no right way to do a resume.

    Personal information

    Full name --------
    mob and home number ------------
    Adress -----------------
    Email address-------------
State if you have your own relailble transport and what licece you hold ---

    education

date place and outcome of the course/degree ------

    employment history

dates worked ----------- Comapny name (include a website) optional
    Position -----------
    Duties and responsiblities

-Do these in bullet points as its easier to read
    -
    -
    -
    -
    -
-6 or 7 points should cover most positions

    referee
    Full name-----
    Their position -----
    contact details
If you want to put referees its easier to put them under each empoyer

Just repeat it for the rest of it

It really up to you if you are going to put them on or NOT. It does not make you more attractive candidate if you have references listed. Pleople look at your work history and solid work history will make you more attractive candidate.

If you have hopped skiped and jumped every few moths without an explanation (contract work, temping ) people will not look at you favourably.

Best of BB and be positive, i know it can get you down BUT stressing wont help.

I am still tryin to get all the help I can get tho so miss chevious and Rider may I please have ur email addresses so I can show u both?

Biker babe! Don't worry chicky. I have tried staying positive but ther have been times where I have felt sorry for myself. Things can only ever get better.

    re: looking like an essay...
Break your experience down into point form in reverse order. No need to elaborate, what you want is a quick list of where you worked and the key responsibilities/tasks for each job.

Any clarification / queries regarding the details will be conducted either by phone call or interview.
    (edit: beaten by ice)

2c, but if you have referees who you can use, put them on there. Don't put "on request" if you can help it, because all that does is piss the person off who is reading it because it creates extra work for them (they need to get hold of you before they can even check your references).

Maybe add "additional references available on request" if you have some who are good for specific queries, but i'd provide at least 1-2 references on the cv. Personally...
