Retard Can't Stop Car - news clipping

Man survives cruise control jam on Eastern Freeway | News.com.au

This idiot's cruise control in his POS Ford Explorer locked on. Instead of putting it in neutral and turning it off then braking, he panicked, called triple O and kept going. SUPER DOUCHE!!!

I don't quite get it either.

Sure you would lose brake and steering assist, but you're on a freeway...plenty of room to gradually slow down, and no heavy steering input required.

Why couldn't he do neutral > engine off > brake/hand brake?

And why didn't the cruise control disengage when he hit the brakes?

His retort to all these simple solutions is a classic "you weren't there man!". Seems like a giant drama queen to me. Notice how he did manage to safely stop the car when he really had to?

In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

I asked the same question earlier today and was told he couldn't kill the engine and was stuck in gear!

That one might be genuine ... switch failure. But yeah, just kill the engine man.

Don't forget though if you kill the engine the steering lock will engage.

Remember the story of that fresh-outta-school P-plater who used to turn his car off to "save fuel" or something equally stupid? Well, he died because the steering lock engaged and he couldn't avoid obstacles.

Turning the key to ACC is enough to kill the engine, and that doesn't lock the steering.

Wont the steering lock only engage with the key out?

Surely not if the engine is off and the car is in Acc.

Maybe Sherlock meant loss of power steering.

anyone got a ford explorer? go drive along with cruise on and see if you can take the key out

i still think at the end of the day, he could have put 2 feet on the brake pedal and bring the car to a stop, if he wasn't driving like a fucking woman

sherlock: most cars have 4 positions on the steering: lock, accessories, on and engage starter. The steering only locks in the lock position, you can turn most cars to accessories, which will keep the electrics running, but turn the engine off, and won't lock the steering.

Also, who cares if you cant take the key out... it's called neutral. Either this is an attention seeking hoax, or he should be banned from driving for ever.

I know this barfy — what I should have elaborated is that telling this particular guy to turn the engine off was likely to result in the same thing (turn off, key out) because he's a moron ;)

I think we should get Fastgirl to test drive one and then review it...

A particular section for "Does the cruise control disengage when I apply the brake/does the engine stop running when I turn the key while in motion" could be interesting.
