    Rifle Range

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a rifle range that will let you shoot without the needing to do competitions. I have started reloading my own round and want somewhere to go and test different loads before going out hunting.

    I have a 223 so probably need at least a 200m range.

    Cheers

Yeh I've been there a few times. Ok for the 22 and to break in the 223 but a bit pointless otherwise

I thought you only had to attend and do competitions if the gun was supported by the club on your licence. Its been years since I attended a club but I'm sure they were happy to have financial members who just wanted a range close to home for reloading and sighting, you might get dragged into a busy-bee or two but.

If he has a gun and just wants to use a range i would say its on an open licence
not sure of any clubs that will just let you use the range even for a fee as i have had the same issue so i just head up early when i go and set out my own range.
Best of luck with finding one.

Yeh my rifle is on an open license. Will try those clubs early next year. Just wanted to get an idea of what clubs to visit. Saves wasting time later on

Who needs a rifle range, I just went down the suburban backyard and fired off a few rounds from an AR-15, XD-9 and 357 Magnum. I felt a bit bad for the neighbours and asked if we should let them know first. My host replied "Nah, they'll find out soon enough". But then it was in North Caroliina.

We have a 500m centre fire range at Wanneroo but like it's been said you would need to become a member if you wanted to go up whenever it suited you to test your loads.

To become a member there is a joining fee, a yearly membership fee plus joining the SSAA but you don't have to attend the comps. If you don't want to be a member then the other option is to befriend a member and go up with them as a guest. But that limits you to only going when they do.

This^^^ There are several clubs up at Wanneroo, Perth Lever Action Club, Perth Field Rifle Club & Perth Rifle Metallic Silhouette Club, I believe that at least some have members with open licences that only rarely use the range Best bet would be to give them a ring and find out

Wanneroo shooting complex is the most restrictive in western Australia if you shoot your match and leave they get the shits.

If you want to shoot on an open licence do so and tune your rounds in the field where you will use them or just join a club and enjoy the politics that go with it.

you cant have both if you want a range then you must pay for the privilege and attend the shoots.
personaly just spend more time in the bush did hand loads most game shot with a .223 is between 100 and 200m a couple of inches at night realy are you tuning hand loads for that or just having a go at hand loading if you are then join a club and learn about it or just buy factory. be nice to have a range to rock up to when you want but we live in a nanny state where ballistic sports are frowned upon so you'll either have to join the nra ore ssaawa and a club or buy your own targets and pop away at will.

Like in Para's post I'm a member of the Metallic Sillhouette at Wanneroo. Sounds a bit ghey I know but it's one of the hardest disiplines of shooting as you have to shoot freestanding, no resting or support. If you click the link on the website it'll have a calander and 'whats on'. We have a 100m rim fire range and a 500m centre fire range. We also use handguns and do the same thing although that's not a recognized disipline, that's more for fun. There's talks in the works about us also doing practical pistol and lengthening the centre fire range out enough to use some really large calibre rifles such as .50

    Fingers crossed it happens.

Just be aware that during the week the gates to the whole complex are locked and to get in you must have a key. To have a key you need to be a member for at least 3 months and will probably need to show your face on a few weekend comps in order for the comittee to get to know you a little. On weekends though the gates are open all the time.

SSAA is only $75 a year and you also get a liability insurance of some description.. To be an SSAA member doesn't require you to shoot comps..

I was under the impression that was only a requirement for if the club supported your application and is your reason for your firearm...

My father in law is a member up at MMA and occasionally I tag along to test some rounds.. I believe they just like you to be involved in the club if you join and where possible contribute... Doesn't seem too overbearing?

    My 2c worth..

Unfortunately the closest property I have to shoot on is about 3 hours away which makes it a little hard to go and test loads for a few hours.
Yeh I'm only using them for game but I figure if I'm reloading I might aswell make them as good as possible. It's all part of the hobby

Sounds good mate. Fingers crossed for the extensions. My next rifle will be in 300 winmag so a long range will be good.

Maybe I'll see you down there january some time.
