Roads Safety Minister Rob Johnson slams V8 ban plan | Perth Now

Roads Safety Minister Rob Johnson slams V8 ban plan
ROAD Safety Minister Rob Johnson has slammed Mark McGowan's plan to curb young drivers from driving powerful cars as "policy on the run" and another "thought bubble".

Mr Johnson also accused Mr McGowan, who will be elected as the leader of the WA Labor party tomorrow after Eric Ripper’s resignation last week, of “arrogance” for announcing new party policy despite not officially being appointed Opposition leader.

The Sunday Times today revealed that Mr McGowan will ban WA drivers from driving high-powered cars including V8 engines until they are at least 21-years-old if he is elected premier at the state election next year.
aah, for once a sensible idea from a pollie, and all of a sudden our camera-loving minister wants hard facts!

"I am just flabbergasted at his arrogance of coming out with policy on the run without any basis or any research whatsoever,” he said.
    What a fucking hypocrite.

Mr Johnson said the policy would affect a "tremendous number” of young drivers who would not be able learn to drive in their parents' car.

Yes, I chortled when I heard that on last night's news. I was more impressed that he delivered it with complete sincerity.

I think that limiting the power of the car for under 21's is a great idea, and whilst bwe are at it please can we make sure that operating instructions are manditory for the sale of base ball caps.

A few of the eastern states have had this for a number of years now, with good results. It's not like this 'thought bubble' is coming from nowhere.

Of course it didn't mention installing any more speed cameras, so Mr Johnson is completely against it.

    similarly
Booting it in an excel danger < booting it in dad's v8 maloo.

You get your licence, your parents buy you a spanking new <generic high powered car>, you're going to want to show off.
Give yourself 3 years to learn the basics, then you can buy a <generic high powered car> and show off with at least a modicum of road awareness and skill.

Rob's tactic of just putting cameras everywhere to catch you being naughty doesn't solve anything (particularly for new drivers).

How about proper driver training so that they are equipped to drive these vehicles when they get their license in the first place....
Decent theory, skid pan testing as well as an on-road component.

There is currently research being done at Curtin-Monash into this very issue, and the opposition is waiting for the findings of that research before making any decisions, which seems fair enough.

They will ultimately suggest much the same thing.

and all of a sudden our camera-loving minister wants hard facts!
Funny how it works. Why? Because car dealers would make a certain percentage of sales to young CUB's, and they will lose trade should a law like the one aforementioned come into practice. They need research to back it up so they don't upset their business mates too much. Work out some plan whereby there is some sort of trade-off.

The opposition leader is from Rockingham, nobody buys a new car there anyway.

    SO MUCH THIS!
The amount of people I went to school with that learnt with their mum's and dad's on their L's was incredible. My best friend was one of them. She was doing 70 in a 100 zone because she wasn't ready for it. Her dad was in the car with her.
I did all my lessons with an instructor, it takes away all the small habits your parents pass onto you.

It's also safer with an instructor because they have dual controls. I was in Cockburn and a learner stalled at the same round-about 5 times. They were bad stalls as well- the car struggled to start. Dual controls stop this happening and normally by the second stall you do around a busy intersection, the instructor will take over because you get so frazzled with all the cars beeping behind you! It stops you getting too panicked.

My mum freaks out when I'm in the car- she gets SUPER nervous, I drove with her once and she made me so uneasy I almost had an accident. I never drove with her whilst I was on my L's again.

But once your on your P's you all by yourself and you can throw all the stuff out the window you learnt with your instructor.... (apparently) and then you can drive daddy's big V8- because hey- you passed your tests which only test if you can park a car and use indicators. They don't test whether or not you can drive...

After I passed my driving test my dad got in the car with me and taught me how to emergency brake in my car- because it doesn't have ABS. It was wet and I wasn't great to start out- but I got really good in the end. Driving in the dark with really heavy rain I had to learn, to counter steer my car out of the puddles that draw you into the left when you go a certain speed.

Now- I'm not saying I'm a great driver- I'm shit compared to others, but I'm better than some that think they own the road and get in their dad's Souped up V8 and drive into a ditch because they don't know HOW to drive such a high powered vehicle in comparison to the Hyundai Excel they had as a learner car....
Hi- I'm Emma! (aka Twigs, Twiglett, whatever you come up with at the time)
