Hi Guys

Please take the time to read this, it's important.

I’m currently studying my Masters in Forensic Sexology, specialising in child sex tourism and sex trafficking in South East Asia. As part of my research I will be travelling to Thailand and possibly Laos and Cambodia to look at the current initiatives of non-government organisations in the rescue of children who have been kidnapped or sold into sexual slavery. I’ll also be looking at education and infrastructure aimed at reducing the number of children sold into sexual slavery by their families.

Unfortunately this kind of thing isn’t the aim of those offering scholarships, which are pretty much reserved for engineering and commerce/IT, and as such this will be self funded research.

Currently it is estimated there are over 1 million children in South East Asia, some as young as 4 or 5, who have been forces into sexual slavery, with many of the governments in this area too poor or corrupt to really do anything about this.

To do my project I am working with an organisation that utilises volunteers to travel to Thailand and rescue children from brothels and traffickers, taking them to safe houses where they are cared for, and if possible taken back to their families.

As you can understand, taking the time off work to travel to Asia, as well as travel expenses will not be cheap, though I believe this is a very worthy cause, and as many of the offenders come from Australia we have an obligation to do what we can to help stop this.

I am requesting your assistance in helping me fund this important research, so I can help get the message out that there are people willing to do something about this, and make a difference to the lives of so many children at their own expense.

I’ll be organising some fund raising events throughout the next few months, which I hope you can all attend, though if you would like to make a donation this would be gladly accepted. Please PM me if you would like to assist me, and keep an eye out for more posts about fundraising events.

It does make the finances a bit tight, but hopefully can do it without selling the bike. It's only an EOI atm, so fingers crossed I can keep it. Thanks, I'm hoping people will get behind this, it's such a worthy cause.

Its a gut wrenching thing to know about thats for sure. I remember 60 minutes doing a segment on it, and it was sickening. And the amount of Aussie men doing it was astounding. Most girls sold are by their own families because they simply cannot afford to feed the girl or the rest of their families
I couldnt do this kind of work as id kill people. Glad to know there are people out there like you MissA willing to knuckle down and fight it.

Thanks Fastgirl. Yeah, many of the children are sold by their families and told that the kids will be put to work in factories, but end up in brothels. So sad. A lot of their work is educating the families, and assisting them to become self sufficient so they don't have to resort to selling their kids.

Good luck. I did my Masters degree in criminology and know how hard research is and the cost of such research (although mine was a lot cheaper- I did not have to travel overseas to do it!).

What is the name of the organisation?

I have a few mates who did something similar in Fiji through the AYAD program. I may be able to put you in touch with some others in the region too, if you want. One of the girls just got back from Laos (I think) and I'm pretty sure she'd be able to help you out a fair bit - advice, contacts etc.

I may be able to help out with the fundraising events too, we have a network of returned volunteers that might be able to get involved.

Various journal articles, the UN, UNICEF, specialists in the field, etc. I did a presentation on this in my postgrad, can't remember the atricles off the top of my head, though can forward the information later via PM if you are interested in the details.

There should be more done to name and shame these pedophiles and then imprison them when they get back.....is there a name/shame website like the mako one in my signature
