SOPA and PROTECT IP; American Censorship

As some of you may or may not be aware, but America is currently trying to bring in two new legislations concerning the internet (SOPA) and (PROTECT IP)

The long cut short. They're trying to give the government new powers to block Americans' access websites that corporations don't like. The bill would criminalise posting all sorts of standard web content - music playing in the background of videos, footage of people dancing, kids playing video games, and posting video of people playing cover songs. Because the internets backbone more or less resides in America, this could cause concerning international problems.

Here's a few site to check out:

SYLO take note, this is how you let people know about political causes that you are worried about

Firstly I think if it does come in it will simply move more internet hosting offshore (to EU, Asia etc) but overall SOPA only goes to highlight where the big music/movie industries are simply too slow to adopt new technologies. The internet has brought 'now' into our homes. We want to watch it 'now' etc and we want value. It's the same mistake they're making around the gaming industry. Would anyone pay $50 to play BF3 once? This is why more and more households are spending their money on games. Better value.

Going to the movies costs big bucks, is a singular experience and you have to go out. Weighed up against downloading it 'now', watching it as many times as I like in the huge theatre room I've built, the cinemas simply aren't cost effective.

If they switched to a digital-to-your-door latest movies (and for the price of a DVD) they'd find more people willing to pay. Say for example, if Tin Tin was $30.00 to download and own and I could do it right now, I'd happily pay. But tell me I have to pay $50+ for my kids to watch it once and the temptation is there to simply download it. It's not right, but that's what people do.

I want to watch a movie review, click on "Download to your Media Player?" and watch it as many times as I like and I'll pay for that.

Some of the draconian laws around music are just plain stupid. Like why the hell should I have to pay a license fee simply for having the radio on at my office? But you do and if you don't there are fines. But overall (thanks manly to services like iTunes) more and more people are buying their music because it's cheapish, you can pick and choose individual tracks and not whole albums, and the process is easy and 'now'. The fact that it allows unsigned musicians to also get their names out there is a bonus.

David Emmett at "Kroppotkin Thinks/Motomatters.com" has a comprehensive article about the dangers the laws pose.

As someone said, PSB could be closed down very quickly.

Then there's the deliberate sabotage aspect. The operator of another site could post copyright matrial here then make a complaint.
Suddenly, advetising revenue and redirections cease.

On the bright side, at the moment support in Congress appears to be fading.

How would a US law apply here? PSB would have to have been in breach of Australian Law.

Even though I posted this up a month ago, it's only recently been discuessed. On the news and here. Go figure...

But of course news has come out that SOPA and PIPA appear to have a stake in it's heart.

Well I guess within Australia you could still surf the site, but would mean the US might block the domain reaching there. Not sure if that means much, or if there is that many PSBers in the US?

PSB is hosted on servers based in USA so we 'could' have difficulties if they went down that path.

Nope - very much in control - if you are a leading politician, a corporation or in the media.

I watch a 'documentary' the other day. It basically looked at how an elite group created the US Federal Reserve (everyone knows the US Fed is a private company right?) and gained control of the US banking system (more than the politicians even). After a while they decided they needed more global financial control and started the IMF, World Bank and WHO (quite why the WHO, I'm not sure). Realising that controlling so many Governments was going to be too hard they then suggested setting up Free Trade Agreements and eventually common currency blocks (EU anyone?).

In the latest covert support by this group, they put their money behind SOPA and other legal manoeuvres designed to control the internet, the one thing still reasonably free from control. It's true freedom that is the only thing they're scared of.

Conspiracy? Definitely. Gotta love a good conspiracy especially when most of the facts are true...

I think the 2 bills are disgusting. They are willing to demolish the internet to line their pockets. Billions of people will lose out from these laws. I have vowed never to purchase anything from the list of supporters again.

I, for one, welcome out new SOPA overlords
    kent_brockman.gif

SOPA appears to be dying a slow death, but PIPA, the less extreme version, may now be touted as a much better option in comparison.
Conspiracy me thinks that this was the plan from the start-
    >Introduce draconian bill and less draconian bill
    >Draconian bill gets widely protested
    >Draconian bill gets shelved
    >Less draconian bill suddenly seems quite modest
    >New age of internet control by corporations

I agree with @ that if the media companies came up with an easy and instant alternative, and adapted to the new world of internet marketing, I would use it. But instead they seem fixed on keeping the old system going where they control everything for ridiculous costs, and fight any and all change to their procedures.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon! Press the brake foot as you roll around the corners, and save the collapse and tie up.
