Up for some abstract thinking and I thought I might generate a stimulus on “out there” to encourage the PSB crew.

I know we are bike riders so the left side of the brain gets used so what’s ya thoughts on TEOTWAWKI.

It’s a sad day when you need to answer your own post but I suppose it’s a bit like the governments stimulus sfforts, dead effort.

My thoughts?
Ok, here goes.

We live in a society (or are members of a species, take your pick) with an inherent fascination for alarmism. And that's all this is.

The basic premise here is that the Mayans stopped predicting the dates on which astronomical events will occur in 2012, and [insert extra-chromosome thought process here] therefore the universe/world/society will end on that date!

Of course these conspiracy theorists expect the astronomical clocks of dead societies to be accurate for the rest of eternity, and also apparently either believe that the fate of the universe is decided by the astronomical predictions of primitive societies, or that the Mayans have magical powers to tell that the world will end when modern science suggests no such thing.

It's funny that the Mayans, who were crazy about writing things down, didn't bother to write "Oh and by the way, the world will end on THIS date" if they knew.

The end of the world ... depends on who you ask as to when its gonna happen and who is gonna be the saved or whatever. The end will come one day. Whether or not we see it well that remains to be answered.

Trust me, if the scientific community knew, they'd be shouting it from rooftops.

I remember reading somewhere on Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine about a meeting of astronomers who were setting up an asteroid risk programme. One of the maybe two dozen (from memory) scientists stood up and said that if the world were about to be destroyed by an asteroid, they should keep it quiet to preserve order in society. The other scientists basically went ape shit on his ass, cutting him down and accusing him of being amoral.

The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy states something simular to this;
“If anyone discovers what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappeared and be replace by something even more bizarre and inexplicable”.
The book also states that “this has happened before”.

So maybe 2012 the universe will be replaced from the preceding comment of “So that’s how it works” then big bang 3.
