Big Bash cop was senior officer's son
NSW Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Murdoch's son is under investigation for allegedly punching repeatedly a spectator during a Big Bash cricket match at the SCG.
Mobile phone video footage of the incident emerged on Friday showing a uniformed NSW policeman punching the 39-year-old Sydney man several times as security officers restrained him.
It emerged on Saturday that the officer shown in the video footage, aired by the Seven Network, is the son of Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch.
A police spokesman confirmed the sole police officer shown in the footage was Mr Murdoch's son.
Mr Murdoch, commander of the Central Metropolitan police region, on Saturday removed himself from an internal police investigation into the incident, citing a personal conflict of interest.
"Mr Murdoch, who launched the investigation, became aware late yesterday (January 20) that a relative was involved in the police response and immediately informed the NSW Police Executive that it would be inappropriate for his region to undertake the investigation," NSW Police said.
"The conflict was not immediately apparent as initial names of officers supplied to the region of officers involved in the arrest of a man were not complete."
Officers attached to the North West Metropolitan police region will now lead the investigation.
The incident took place in the Victor Trumper stand during the Big Bash limited overs match between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers on January 18.
The spectator allegedly first refused to leave the Sydney Cricket Ground when asked and then resisted arrest.
He was taken to Surry Hills police station where he was issued with a field court attendance notice for remaining within a licensed premises and resisting police.
Mr Murdoch told the Seven Network on Friday that "the video footage, in isolation, doesn't look great".
But he said the incident had to be taken in context, adding: "We will allege that he (the spectator) resisted arrest quite violently".
Lucky it wasnt the MCG they might have shot him.
meh, should be more of it, make dickheads think twice, back in the day if you fucked around you got "tuned up" and seriously thought twice about acting like a tard in public again. too many bleeding hearts out there now....and mobile phones with cameras![]()
living the dream

Love to see some footage of the 10 mins prior. He wasnt getting restrained for being a happy drunk.
but from that video you can't see what the person did or didn't do. You can see that the cop punching the person who is being held by about 5 guards. Its not upto the cops to punish people.
If you did that to somebody who deserved it, for whatever reason, do you think the cops would say, it's ok he deserved it, or would you end up in court? It shouldn't be one rule for them and another for everyone else
thats why pepper spray . tazers . were given to cops . why dont the government give them knuckle busters aswell
anyway . the cop might have scuffed his bare knuckles . should have used his baton or a big knife

Cops hit like girls anyway.

its called the 20 - 20 big bash after all . lol

Bullshit.
Compliance is sitting on him and arm locking him. Punching anyone from a law enforcement role is simple violence. A simple baton to the leg would have sufficed to get him down to be sat on.
They are trained (supposedly) to be prepared for these situations and be able to handle themselves in a controlled and professional manner.
There are 3 arms to the law for a reason.

I don't like your chances of swinging a baton safely in an environment like a crowded cricket grandstand - in terms of escalation of use of force, the asp/baton is 2nd last on the list next to the firearm, I'd rather they threw a couple of punches than swing a baton if I was sitting nearby anyway
