I'm a Canon fan but thats just my opinion and personal choice.
The two major players in the Digital SLR at the moment are Canon and Nikon, it does depend on the type of photography you are intending on doing. High speed and action type photos go canon... look at a sports feild, cricket, football, Formula 1 etc. and count the Canons vs all others. Canon also has a huge amount of accessories available.
Doing portraits go for the Nikon.
    5K will get you a Canon 30D 8.2Mpix and a 70-200 f2.8 lens, probably a 1.4x converter and a few filter.
5K will also get you just the body of a Canon 5D 12Mpix *drool*

A Canon 350D 8Mpix will set you back about $1200 this of course will leave you with a bit more cash for lenses , a 70-200 f2.8 + 1.4x converter + another decent lens + filters. which you will need because the standard lens is somewhat of a let down.
The universe likes speed. Don't delay. Don't second guess. Don't doubt. When the opportunity is there, when the impulse is there, when the intuitive nudge from within is there, act.

ah she has done a lot of portrait style photos lately as she has been busy with pics of our 6 month old etc

i think most of the photos she has taken over the years are more movement/action photos (sports etc)

i might ask her, just dont want her to catch on to what im doing

i think i would like to buy a camera and extra bits as opposed to just the camera, but a camera alone would be nice and she can sort out what she wants from there for lenses etc.

Like Robin, I'm a Canon fan.
No real reason. Folks had a Canon, I used to play with that, so I stuck with what I knew.
Also prior to getting my 350D I had a IXUS430 which put's out great images for the size and cost.

Google for comparison reviews, search PSB, this has been discussed before.
www.dcresource.com is a good site for comprehensive reviews and sample pic's.

Have a chat to the guys at Camera Electronic in North Perth.
They'll have both and really know their stuff. Ask for Saul and say you heard about them from PSB.

    Have fun.

As a canon user (EOS 10D) I'm always jealous of how good the photos from a Nikon come out of the camera. So much warmer and with better colour. The 80D might be worth investigating. But as Turbo said, canon's are faster and have better low light performance.

Stupid question but the lenses for the other camera's what do they suit? Maybe you can get just a body and be able to use the lenses she already has if they are auto drive. Apparently the digital SLR's don't like manual lenses.

EF mount lenses will fit all the current Canon models. Lens makers like Sigma, Tokina and others make the lens, and the either reverse engineer the mount and electronics, or license it from the original manufacturer. Canon doesn't license their mounts or electronics.

Non-AF lenses will still fit onto a AF mount of the same kind (eg, EF mounts, but no autofocus), but will require manual focusing and/or aperture stopping.

Canon all the way, always have been, always will be.
Started with the old AE1, and went from there.
Recently actually downgraded to a compact, but it's still a canon

    I had a Nikon D70 which I liked, but if going again, I'd get a Canon 30D.

    Important question:

Does your wife have any Canon or Nikon lenses?

This should influence your decision, as these lenses can be used with the DSLRs as well.

DSLR boffins, I forget, is the 30D full frame yet or not?

If not, your wife's old lenses will have a zoom factor built in because of the way most digicams work.

    For Nikon it's 1.5x, for Canon it's 1.6x

So for example, if your wife had a 100mm lens, with a Nikon it will be the equivelant of a 150mm lens and with a Canon it'd be like a 160mm lens.

Hope that's confused you even more

Desmo: I wanna upgrade my digicam. What you get? Was drooling over the S80, but I've still got heaps of compactflash cards around and want to keep to that format.
