in a chronologous summation of my working life:
left high school - didnt know what i wanted to do at uni
45-50hrs wk in fast food management
then
40hrs wk in retail - this felt like a holiday so took on more "important role"
so
45-50hr wk
then transfered up and across in the organisation
50-60hr wks, with peak trade periods (4 out of 12 months a year) 105hr a week, yes 105!
then stuff that, went to uni and worked part time
circa 20hrs a week
then taken time off uni to clear some accruied debts
basically what everyone says is true - if your work is killing you, quit, there is always something else you can do in the interrum. Even if it does not have the same pay, better life is what it's all about.
having said that, i love doing a good day's work, it makes me feel like i have achieved something. Hence the period of stupid hrs worked back then.

I want to be out on a mine somewhere, swinging a shovel and digging ditches if thats what it takes. Driving a big-ass truck would be nice, but I'll be happy to be doing anything remotely manual.

Then after 10 days swinging a shovel you realise how good you had it.

Of the manual labouring types I know, none of them are asked, nor expected, to deal with the depth of broken headedness I see daily.
I can imagine I will no longer ever have to utter the phrase; "No, you horrible cunt, I cannot fix your microwave" or "If your son insists on downloading porn diallers, I fail to see how this is my problem".
I'll trade the constant headfuck for hard work an ipod and a paycheque to knock the hell out of my mortgage.

I did the opposite of what you want to do, spent 15 years in the mines doing all sorts of crazy shit 80-100 hour weeks, months on end in the bush, worked UG, gold extraction plants, gold room, labs, construction, maintenance, operated cranes for a few years, then bailed and studied IT.
now i sit on my bum all night dribbling shit to people who cant find the start button on their pc, easiest job Ive had in my life, not mining money but still reasonable wage, another year should see me bored of this and needing something I can get my teeth into again

Fair enough, but I'm sure theres other options other than being a pit ape.
Wouldn't pay as well, but I'd still consider so many other things over mine work.

I'm under the impression that I'll be accruing almost 3 months worth of T.O.I.L. on top of annual leave over the next 12 months at the new job once on permanent staff. Over the previous 9 days, I did 108 hours on night shift - absolutely killed any notion of a social life.
NFI what I'll do with all that spare time, would rather get paid the over time when I work more, and take unpaid leave if I want more time off than the 4 weeks you'd normally get. Will have to wait and see what I get offered in June.

For the most part, they have alot of companies over a barrel. It's the willing employees and those that keep their mouths shut that ultimately pay the price.
As an employer, I treat all staff with the respect id expect from my boss. If some one wants a day off for any reason, most of the time I'll say yes. Finish a job early, go home early. It keeps most of them happy and they truely appreciate it. There is one arsehole however that feels its ok to take take take and is willing to give nothing back. His attitude is that we owe him something and he simply couldnt give a rats arse about anyone but himself. So much for a team effort. Having someone on staff with that attitude and work ethic impacts on his peers in that they're often left to pickup the peices which ultimately means more work for everyone else. Without this individual we'd be worse off still. It's the same situation with alot of people I speak to. A few bad eggs and the whole omlettes ruined.
The current climate wont last for ever but we do have quite a number of years ahead before things start to settle down. Staff movement has already slowed in some industries as employers stop taking it up the arse from staff who are truely kidding themselves. Not much, but its starting to head back in the right direction.

Bad eggs have one place in this world and its the dole queue, it may hurt for a while if you fuck him off but you will find someone with a better work ethic.
I had a mate who was the ducks nuts of his trade and always spoke about how they would never fuck him off and that he did what he liked, they sacked him and employed 2 people to do his job and didnt have to put up with his shit.
Having cocks with crap attitude just makes everyone adopt the same reasoning and it affects business ten fold, let him go and everyone realises how lucky they are to have a job and the enviroment at work is so much better as everyone gets along better and works well.
When i go on holidays the place turns to shit but life goes on and they get by, the same thing can happen if he quits or gets sick, in this day and age you should never let one person be in total control, others should be taught to do his job.
What happens when he goes on holidays or is sick does work shut down.
I think not.

Well this is topical...
Government urged to ban overtime.
Personally I think people who work for someone else, who aren't 'doing it tough' and who still regularly work large amounts of unpaid overtime have a life lesson or two to learn yet.

Was an article in one of last weeks papers (mon or tues) detailing how it might affect Mining FIFO workers.

The motor industry over comes this by putting 38 or 40 hours on the payslips.

I tend to agree. If you're putting in vast amounts of unpaid time on the job, you're either managing things poorly or you're a sucker.

If you're under the impression, I'd suggest you check. A rude shock may await you. Get it confirmed, preferably in writing.
