"The State must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation." Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf

"In all the human societies we have ever reviewed, in every age and in every state, there has seldom if ever been a shortage of eager young males prepared to kill and die to preserve the security, comfort and prejudices of their elders, and what you call heroism is just an expression of this fact; there is never a scarcity of idiots." -The Culture

Loved it, except the bit about Aspergers not being real.

Both
There are way too many tards on the internet who claim to have self-diagnosed Aspergers, and use that as their excuse for just about anything (despite having never seen a psychiatrist for official diagnosis, or despite being psychiatrically assessed as normal).

The long-term problems of the medications are only just now becoming apparent.

Would that be things like teeth falling out and depletion of bone calcium?
Psychosis, Schitzophrenia, and acne?
Always wondered if the long term effects of ADHD medication would be the same as long term amphetamine addiction.

I haven't heard much about those problems, but as with any psychoactive medication, the brain adjusts over time - which is why they all lose their effectiveness when used over the long-term. It's important to remember that no psychoactive medication 'cures' any condition - they are all simply management aids, and the longer they are used, the more the brain is in a position to 'combat' them. The brain is quite an amazing organ in terms of what's known as plasticity. It will continue to change and adjust to any internal or external stimulus. The real problem seems to come from changes that become quite permanent, and it seems that people who have been on AD/HD medication become a lot more susceptible to depression in adult years, and their pleasure centres also seem to be depleted (which is almost certainly a large factor in the increased incidence of depression, but also seems to lead to a flattening of pleasant moods). There's also mounting evidence that it changes gene expression, especially one called c-fos, and that definitely isn't a good thing.
