Five years ago today a legend taken from us...."Barry" The Story of Motorcycle Legend Barry Sheene" book by his wife Stephanie and good friends Steve Parrish & Nick Harris well worth reading.

This is the fifth anniversary of the death of Britain's last MotoGP champion. Barry Sheene died back in 2003 after losing his battle with cancer.

His final years were spent on the Gold Coast after he moved to Australia in an effort to mitigate the effects of arthritis, the result of so many broken bones.

The London-born biker won back-to-back MotoGP titles in 1976 and 1977 on the 500cc bikes which were then used but he was almost as famous for falling off as he was for riding them at great pace.

One incident in particular captured the public imagination. In the British GP at Silverstone in 1979 he enjoyed a ding-dong battle with Kenny Roberts. After overtaking the American late in the race Sheene looked back nonchalantly over his right shoulder, took his left hand off the clutch and flicked a V sign at his opponent while travelling at over 100mph down the back straight. The then commentator Murray Walker rather sweetly refers to the gesture as "a wave".

Sheene was not only a great rider but he is widely credited with popularising what was once seen as a minority sport. He was also a canny businessman and he was one of the first sportsmen to earn substantial money from endorsements.

For all that he was a biker first and foremost.

I didn't grow up watching the bikes too much, so the first I knew of him was as a funny bugger doing shell ads with Dick Johnson.

Legend in his own lifetime.

Let us not forget his legacy to all riders is the back protector that many of us wear today.

Always called it how he saw it, sadly missed.

Met him only very briefly before he passed. Just happened to be in the same West Perth restuarant as my wife's friend's birthday party. I got the waiter to drop him a note wishing him and Stephanie all the best, and the next thing I know he is wondering over
and shaking my hand. Never forget that.

There are better books. I read two many years ago. I think "Leader of the Pack" was the good one. Did a lot for motorsport in this country in spite of being a pom and not beating Kenny Roberts.

The lovable larrikin, thats got to be Barry.
I remember the first memorial ride at Phillip Is, huge turnout.
It was sad to see him go like that, he made a lot of friends in Oz.
I'll always remember his glove with the little finger drooping and complaining how bloody cold it gets at Phillip Is.

Wasn't a case of being the best book,just worth reading ya fk wit.?
