Loved listening to his commentaries...even with that whining cockney accent. Missed but never forgotten.
Justine.... Always and Forever
Barry Sheene a great racer and a lad at heart(what do i want a sock for?)
Barry Sheene an absolute legend! no one could ever fill his shoes!!
I REJECT YOUR REALITY AND SUBSTITUTE MY OWN
I remember around about 1985ish when I was watching the swan insurance superbike series on the ABC, Darrel Eastlake was in the pits (OLD race) and Darrel stumbles across Barry, Darrel’s blown away, (as usual) and asks Barry what is he doing at the race. Barry tells him that he has just moved over to a warm climate due to old injuries and decided to check out the local race. With that Barry cranks up (as Barry did) saying how good these guys are and believed they have what it takes to ride in Europe.
The next year a bunch Aussies headed off and Gardner being one of them. Its history now and Barry was a big part of that.
I don’t ride to get to the end, I ride for that moment
Hop scotch, skip rope, tunnel ball & football, all the same to me
If you cant ride it or fuck it, then its not sport

Here Bazza is riding as a guest on a Van Veen kreidler and did win the GP!
Barry and King Kenny rivalry was insane to watch when I was young.
Barry was a lot of my inspiration to begin racing. He is a legend and was a racers racer.
As some of you might know he helped develope the back protector with/for Denisse (sic?) leathers. I own my ability to still be walking to that device.
He gave his idea to the motorcycle word and never made a penny off it that I know of.
But thats the type of guy he was. always giving back to the sport the loved so much.
So here is a beer and a pinch of a young birds arse - to you Barry - My hero
What ? Doubt it, son. For starters, Darrell Eastlake sure as hell never got a gallop at the ABC in the Swann Series days, more likely to have been John Smailes, with his smarmy mate Will Hagon in the central missionary position. Secondly, a mob of Aussies, led by the likes of Gregg Hansford, Warren Willing, Jeff and Murray Sayle, Greg Johnson and Graeme Geddes went to Europe in the late 70s, and Wayne Gardner went over as a Moriwaki rider in 1981, copped a Honda contract, and was back here riding in the Swann series as a works Honda rider, that year mixing it up with Mal Campbell and Rob McElnea. Barry had a bit of a say in getting assistance for the likes of Garry McCoy, Chris Vermeulen, and Karl Muggeridge, but the rest had already made a path for themselves without any help from Bazza. I like nostalgia too, but you have to base it around FACT.![]()
