Man jailed over drug fuelled fatal crash

A 27-year-old man who crashed his car while high on methylamphetamine into a four-wheel-drive of a recently retired couple, killing the 63-year-old wife, was sentenced to five and a half years jail today.

Christopher Russell Ireland, of Bunbury, was jailed by District Court Chief Judge Antoinette Kennedy today after he pleaded guilty last October to being involved in an accident occasioning the death of Margaret Holmes.

Ireland had “high levels” of methylamphetamine in his blood when his Holden Commodore crashed head on into a car being driven by Mrs Holmes’ husband Michael on Old Coast Road, Lake Clifton, in December 2006.

The couple had just started their first road trip around Australia.

Ireland was also sentenced to jail on three counts of possessing methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply.

Chief Judge Kennedy said he was a user dealer and no mitigation could be found in his record. But she said he had shown remorse and had been raised in a highly dysfunctional environment.

Chief Judge Kennedy read out excerpts from a victim impact statement from Mr Holmes, which described his “immeasurable grief” at having “42 years of a happy and joyful marriage” taken away from him.

But she said it was not her place to put a value on the life of Mrs Holmes and that it was not in the community’s interest that Ireland be “destroyed”.

She sentenced him to a total of five and a half years jail for the four offences. He was made eligible for parole and the sentence was backdated to when he was first taken into custody in June 2007.

Always sucks to hear this sorta shit. It aint fair and it aint right, but nothing can be better than closure.
