[PC Related] HDD Question

Hey peeps,

Been a while since I have bought any PC hardware and I think I need a new Hard Drive, making strange noises and just kinda shit itself this morning, its working again now but think its time to replace the drive before I loose my data.

I normally buy Seagate drives or WD but just seen these Samsung ones and they are well priced, anyone have experience or stories from Samsung?
They make kick ass LCD panels but what about other gear?

Looking at 750Gb drives as they seem well priced for the capacity

Samsung can be a bit hit or miss. I'd stick with one of the big 2, choose based on price and warranty.

PS. I'd back up what you can, and change your drive sooner rather than later.

i've got a couple of Samsung disks at home, i've not had a problem with them. i've not used enough to be able to give a solid representative sample however.

Allmy SATA drives are SAMSUNG, and I've got 5 Desktop PC's (all up 7 SAMSUNG's), I normally wont touch WD because on the last 3 times I purchased one I have had to return them as faulty.

The Samsungs have not caused me any issues whatsoever.

I just install a 500 GB SATA Samsung. Cost $120 and hasn't given any probs yet, but it has only been one week. My mate Brad has been building PC's for about 10 years now (his own "on the side" business) and reports no bad news about Samsung. He really hates having to follow up dud hardware, as it really chews out his margins, so I generally take his advice

Had a samll issue on install though....powered up and my BIOS was all reset. Dunno what happened, but caused a small amount of angst for a short while.

You can't go wrong with Samsung or Seagate just base your decision on spec and cost.

i cant fault my western digital (got twin 500gb for under 250 i think). have u checked ure fan is clogged with dust?

Slightly OT - are WD's Raptor's still the quickest SATA drives (albeit not SATA-II) or is there something quicker now ? I know larger cache's, larger capacities etc, but in terms of raw get-up-and-go ... anyone ?

As far as i'm aware they are all pretty much of a muchness unless you're trying to squeeze every last bit/sec out. There are a couple of exceptions however. Go check out the latest HDD shootout at tomshardware.com or whatever.

I think everyone who deals with PCs for any decent duration has had fail stories with any drive - i quite like the seagates but have a dead 320gb one right now (not that old).

What I would consider if I were you is dropping capacity a tad (if you have to for $ reasons), going for 2 drives and mirroring them with RAID1.

With drive capacities they way they are, backing shit up is pretty bloody hard for your average joe, and losing 500-1000gb of data would HURT. Capacity these days is heaps. What people really should be considering is fault tolerance.
