Thumbs down

I am a dunce, I've come to realise.

10 years away from high school, didn't do Applicable Maths in y12, so never did calculus. I desperately, and urgently, need a patient maths tutor to teach me the fucking basics of Maths 103... Precalculus basically. I'm 3 weeks into my 1st year, and hopelessly overwhelmed by it all.

North of the river, near Malaga. Name a reasonable price, and I'll pay it. I need someone to start immediately. Even tonight isn't soon enough. I'm not a complete fuckwit (people may disagree with me there) but I just have absolutely no schooling in this level of mathematics, and it's been 10 years since I even saw the word "Algebra". I'm a little rusty.

SMS me on 0430 533 499 please if you're interested in helping a maths n00b.

hey mate,
I'm not really available for tutoring, and probably wouldn't be organised enough to do it either, but if you've got any questions or something pm me and I'll do my best to help.

I really appreciate all the offers of help with questions, but to be honest, I need to be sat down and shown how to process the info. Once I understand how calculus works, I doubt I'll actually need help with questions. That's what calculators are for. My problems lies in the fact that I get (for example) a function:

g(x)= 1/(2-x)^2 And are asked to write down the domain and range. I don't even understand how to go about that.

The lectures don't help, as the lecturer is USELESS {Indian+Mumbling+Rushes Lecture=Fez(Confused)}, and the tutorial is far too short (less than 45 mins a week).

Edit: I've just figured out how to do a quadratic formula. That seems simple enough.

SUMMARY: I don't need help with specific questions. I need help with the subject itself. Just the basics.

are you at curtin uni mate? I could probably catch up with you some time and go over some of the basics.

a calculator, in calculus? lol

I'd suggest to begin with. get some graph paper, and do a rough graph of the region -10 < x < 10. it will give you an idea of the domain and range

With the question you've posted, you need to look at what possible values you can have for x. Start with the fact that if x=2, you will have g(2) = 1/0, which is impossible. so clearly x=2 is not in the range. second, for all positive values of x, greater than 2, (2-x) is going to be negative. BUT since you are squaring that result, you will always be dividing 1 by a positive number (ranging from ~0 up to +ve infinity) the further in the x -ve direction you go, the closer you get to g(+ve infinity) = 0.

for values of x between 0 and -ve infinity, the value of (2-x) is again going to be continually increasing, thus you will have a graph tending to :

g(-ve infinity) = 0

hope this isn't too confusing. Basically the range is the set of all values of x, for which the function g(x) exists. the domain is the set of all values of g(x) possible, given the range of x.
since at x=2 you end up with a vertical asymptote, the function does not exist at that point.

(geez I hope none of that is incorrect. lol)

domain and range? freaking easy

the wiki articles are a little bit "formal" but consider the function

F(x) = x^2 (thats x squared ok)

The RANGE is "what values does the function equal for every value of x". As you will notice the function will never be negative (square a negative number gives you a postive) so the range is the set of "all real positive numbers"

Now for the domain can be said to be "for what input values, do we get a value for the function". Now plug in any value for x, and you will get a result. The domain is the set of all real numbers. Or to show you another example the function

F(x) = 1/x (1 divided by x)

If x = 0, then the function doesnt work (divide by zero error... you get a "hole" in the graph). So the domain for F(x) = 1/x is everything except 0

(this is me rewording the wikipedia articles on range and domain to be easier to understand)

EDIT : damnit sathid beat me to the punch by 1 minute

Hey Ferris;

I tutored math in the past (it's what kept me in pocket through uni) - depending on how much tutoring you actually want, and where you want to do it, we can probably work something out (ie if you want <2h a week, and can fit in with my schedule; and whether you want it at home or are willing to travel etc) I'll have to chat with the missus and make sure she's cool with it, but apart from that...

oh, and you'd have to live down on the forums being tutored by captaindopey

Deja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before.

Shame your NOR, or else I'd be happy to help you out.

Best of luck finding a tutor. I'd recommend approaching your lecturer, yes he maybe Indian and mumble his way through lectures (IMO they should have subtitles for their lectures ) but if you see him and ask him questions about the material, he should be able to give you a hand.
