Recently just set up an import/distribution business in the HiFi line and took on a line of speakers. Impressive performance for speakers their size.

performance doesn't come cheap. and cheap stuff don't perform.

The problem is finding that balance

would love to get some really good HI-FI setup. unfortunately this stuff is well out of my price range at the moment, but hopefully in teh future i could look at this sort of quality stuff.

    cheers

    Too true.
I listened to a pair of Mark Levinson No:33 monoblocks the other day running a pair of Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy 8 speakers....

    ....holy shit

P.S. These amps are $95,000 a pair and use three phase power to operate. The cabling alone is around the $20,000 mark to make it all work

OMHO Wilson charges wayy too much for what they are. True they sound really good but there are better sounding gear out there costing far less. Its mostly about the wank 'hey i got the dosh to thrown around' factor.

Egglestonworks is one such manufacturer, rather obscure company but their stuff are used in top recording studios.

So are Yamaha NS-10 speakers.....but you won't find them in a home set-up because they aren't a musical speaker.

The NS-10 have always been used in studio's because the saying is "if it sounds good on the these it'll sound good on anything!" Emplying how shit they sound.

    Kinda....

The NS-10's have a very flat frequency response which is what you need for near field monitors to accurately represent the sound you are recording.
If you used a "musical" speaker, your end result would be a pre-coloured sound. (not good)

Music should be recorded as flat as possible as the engineer has no control over the environment in which it will be played back in. The onus is on the person who is playing the music to boost/cut frequencies to how they like it.

Audio and visual products are too subjective for claims like that.

It is a very personal thing cos everyone hears and sees things differently.

You simply buy what sounds/looks good for you.

Too many people buy status, not quality.

Thats true to a degree but youd have to be deaf not to be able to tell the difference between say kenwood and bang & olufsen. You might not pick it right away but if you heard them back to back im sure youd hear the difference.

Same goes for LCD/Plasma panels. Celestial V Sony anyone?
