Looking for a Graduate Position in Mining/Minerals/Metallurgy/Chemistry

    Guys,

I'm looking for a new job as my current contract expires in 5 weeks (Feb 29), and have trawled through the job sites and found nothing that's really what I'm looking for.

    Qualifications/Experience (Murdoch University)
    - B.Sc. Chemistry with a minor in Energy Studies (2006)
    - Sardani, Gurdit, Singh Prize in Chemistry (2006)
    - B.Sc Hons Mineral Science (2A, 2007)
    - Completed a Hydrometallurgy unit as a requirement for Honours.

I've been with my current employer (A.J. Parker Co-operative Research Centre) for 2+ years now, on and off whilst studying.
It is time for a change as moving up requires a PhD and more study - something which I'd like to take a break from at this stage.

Happy to stay at a company if there's career prospects down the line, but if it's obviously a dead-end job, I'll be keeping an eye out for what's available, but happy to work for the experience.

So if you know of a position that's going, please let me know and I can forward a resume and anything else required to the appropriate person/s.

    Thanks,
    Jon.

P.S. I need to work so I can keep fixing my bike.

Im working for Leighton Contracting at the moment, we are moving into that industry and starting up a whole lot of work... so theres quite a few positions open...

Heaps of opportunity to travel interstate and overseas in-house as well...obviously being such a large company there are MANY opportunities for advancement, and a VERY nice brand new office in West Perth (with gigantic flat screen TV and a fully stocked double fridge for Friday drinks

PS - if you do apply for something there, PM me, as theres quite a nice spotters fee for me for getting new employees to the company

    Graduate Recruitment Selection Process
Applications for our 2008 Graduate intake have closed.

    ^^^ That's why I'm asking here.

Nothing else suitable on their site...

dont worry about that... it means nothing...
chances are one or two of their graduates will cop out and go somewhere else soon anyway... just send off a CV and tell them you want a job

    Thought about Alcoa?

could try contacting IMO independant metallurgical operations

they specialize in placing mets on contract basis so you dont have to worry about moving around a bit

contract is the best way to build up experience quickly without getting a resume that makes you look like a job hopper

i dont know what you are into, i am guessing phd and aj parker center you are more an indoors type of academic.

personally if you enjoy travel and seeing lots of different places you could think about getting involved in commissioning. its not boring and apart from the travel gives you the opportunity to work closely with a lot of different types of professionals. not just in process but in electrical and mechanical engineering letting you get more closely involved in things like process control and projects.

commissioning could also add to your resume as someone who can make stuff happen which would compliment the nerd acadmic theory research thing you have already got going on

Yep, I called IMO on Monday (prior to seeing this) and they said they'd be happy for me to work with them. I'm more of a hands on/make things happen person, which is why I'm not pursuing the PhD needed to progress in my current job.

I find the idea of contract work both good and bad (currently on contract)
Good, like you said with the range of jobs you can do.
Bad, in that job security isn't guaranteed beyond the contract end if there's a shift in the jobs market.
