    A mate wants a laptop

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

I've had a search, sorry couldn't find anything on the forum.
So, as the title says, I've got a mate looking to buy a laptop.
No more than $1,200. Normal computer duties, internet and
    onboard wireless. Any ideas?
Found these two on Ebay. Comments?

HP Pavilion DV6207TX Laptop 15.4" Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz - eBay, Laptops, Notebooks, Computers. (end time 19-Apr-08 14:14:03 AEST)

Nah mate, and we've got hundreds of them

After sales support is very good with them, very competitive price wise too.

    HAHAHAH That is so correct.

Go Dell, bang for buck on notebooks dell has the market in your budget range, I pass on their servers and workstations but of the many many dell laptops, I have had through various years personally and the hundreds I have supported in the past, minor minor amount of physical hardware issues.

Cam, your opinion is valid but it is just that an opinion.

The request was made for a laptop within a specified budget (read cheap, which I have never found Dell to be) and yes I have owned one previously and it spent more time being repaired than I had possession of it.

After discussion with the IT department at work, knowing that the company used ACER for the past 5 years, I went with what I could afford (which is what I thought this thread asked for).

This is beginning to sound like a Honda v Yamaha v Kawasaki argument.

It all comes down to personal preference, is it in the budget? does it do what is wanted of it?

No Lady Di, it's not a personal opinion, it's based on industry knowledge.. for example with dell.

    Excellent Price
Good Spec Systems and decent power for said specs
    Reliable above most
    Cheap Tactile Feel
    Cheap Interface
    Cheaper end often heavyish
    Can get bit warm

Where my personal laptop choice is and always will be IBM thinkpad series, but this would not come into the requested budget.

They have a much better tactile feel and excellent form and function
    low weight
    great power
    excellent reliability
    good heat dissipation
lack external inputs (svideo, card readers, etc)
    costly.

next I would say ASUS, excellent screens, nice inputs and tactile feels, top performance

    then Toshiba

    then piles of dog poo

then Acer.. They are like the sangyong/hyosung of notebooks, cheap, plastic, slow.

+1 for Dell. Bought and distributed thousands. Very little problems, and great support.

I'm glad yours is working, I'm also amazed.

I can count the number of ACER items I've dealt with that didn't require large amounts of warranty work, or even performed to spec at all on two fingers.

ACER are built from cheaper components with less attention paid to production and almost zero quality control. I've had my ass in a sling too many times over shoddy factory work with them and I can say without a shred of hyperbole that I could not in good conscience recommend them to anybody. It would be like recommending Soylent Green to somebody when you know full well that it's made of people.

I agree Acers are pretty shocking. DET use them for the Notebooks for Teachers program and they are always stuffing up or falling apart. Thank god i managed to scam a Toshiba...

But yeah, +1 for Dell, i've been scouring ebay for a XPS 1330 and you might even get a pretty good spec one for your $1200, either that or a new lower spec Inspiron from Dell's website.

just to jump on the bandwagon.....+1 for Dell.

We've just converted the office onto Dell workstations, a Dell server and a couple of Dell lappys.

For want of a better analogy, they are the Mac for people who dont want Macs. I mean that in the sense that like Macs, the Dells just work. Theres no fucking around, you set them up and turn em on the your away.

    Price is very good too.

I have an ASUS, from my research last year it was the best bang for your buck. I have had no problems and would look at upgrading with ASUS again.

I bought it through PLE as a package, basically same price as Austins.
