Work in Dubai, Saudi, Oman, etc?

    G'day,
I'm hoping at least one of you may have contacts in Dubai, Saudi, Oman, etc. I am looking to work over in that region for a least a few years. Will be taking the family (main reason behind going). I am a licensed electrical contractor with 25 years experience in construction and mining. I have also been working as an electrical design draftsman in the same industries for many years. Any help would be appreciated as the missus has already started packing!
    Thanks,
    Andy

I will watch this one with interest. I'm a sparkie also and was considering this idea as well. (Wife wants a break from Perth too). I got a bit put off after hearing that tradies
don't do that well there as they use a lot of cheap labour from nearby countries eg. india. Electrical engineers from here are highly regarded and can do really well.

I lived in Bahrain for a while which has quite a similar atmosphere to Dubai, although Dubai has a lot more going on there now.
If you are a white collar worker you can do extremely well over there but the tradies not so good. They use cheap indian/filipino labour that costs them less than $100 a month in wages.

They had exactly the same issue in Bahrain, they tried to get rid of the visa system that allowed them in because unemployment was so high but as a whole the arabs are too lazy to work manual labour and expect the world to actually do it, so it still goes on

The BIGGEST BOOM is on here in WA called Minning/OIL Gas production building/expansion!
Very good Money is earned here!
I am interested why people want to go O/S.
Surely one can earn very well being a WA licensed sparky!

If you're considering taking family as well as want to live a little stay away from Saudi. The rest are ok in terms of lifestyle however in Saudi you're bound by strict Muslim laws which can be tough for any female members of the family. On the other hand you'd probably save a lot more than Dubai, Bahrain as you wouldn't have too much to spend your money on.

    you'd be suprised

He is right about sharia law( its fucking ridiculous but you still have to follow it), and you have to be there for about 6 months before you can get residency permits for the rest of your faimily. Non-arabs are not allowed into Saudi unless it is business or they are going on their pilgrimage so that makes it pretty hard for visitors to come see you.

The yankee oil compounds are not to bad and you can pretty much do what you want in there, they are like self sustained villages.

Your right, there's plenty of money here. However, there's plenty of money overseas as well. Now, I've always been of the opinion that it's all about the money, but, I'm finding that as I'm getting older (unfortunately, the "and wiser" bit continues to elude me) a lack of satisfaction at work is out weighing the monetary compensation. I could sit here for the next 10 years stagnating, drawing schematics, etc for conveyor controls and the like (which, without trying to blow my own horn, I'm bloody good at) or go overseas and hopefully expand my knowledge base. Boredom is something I'm not good at. I don't expect any job I do to be edge of the seat, heart stopping excitement day after day, if at all, but I'm finding very little challenge in my current position. The family is getting restless as well, in retrospect, we might have returned to civilisation a little early. Saying that, if something interesting came up locally (within Aus), I'd certainly look into it.

    Still looking.
Most of the online recruitment agencies I've tried
seem to be dodgy as, "Send us $49CAD and we'll check your CV", etc.
    Anyone got any good ideas?

    Typical of over there,

try applying with BAPCO (oil) or ARAMCO (oil) or ALBA (Aluminium)

I know a couple of guys over there still but not sure if they would be able to sort you out.
