    02WTK-Good camping grounds

The missus and I are keen to go camping during July sometime. We realise the weather may not be its best so we are wondering if the great minds of PSB have any suggestions as to where to go?

Im from Margaret River so thats not an option. We dont mind the rain, but we would prefer it if we can actually leave our tent and go exploring.
Hopefully somewhere that has some free/cheap things to do for tourists nearby.

Im looking at buying a tent but have only ever used my folks tents before, any brands i should stay away from? And special features i should look for?

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Probably should note that i drive a small bitch box mazda hatch and its 4WD drive capabilities are non existent

You're a Geology student from Margs, and you don't have your camping sussed?

I think you may be beyond help

I recommend Pemberton- do the gloucester tree, get stoned and dwell in the forest etc.

Best tents are big, canvas and expensive.

For small, occasional trips for two just get a little 3-man dome, oztrail are pretty good.
A swag is good to roll out in small, dodgy tents, that way it doesn't matter if the tent leaks a bit.

What ever tent you get, be sure to bed them in well before using them in anger. Set them up and thoroughly soak them with a hose a let dry. This will seal the stitching.
If it were me I'd get canvas and for something smallish I'd go for either a pole or cantalever design. Much easier to erect in the dark. Domes are a good design to but can be painful to set up when it's dark or wet.

We've got a camper trailer (19'x18') and apart from a 10" downpour we got on the nsw north coast, it's been water tight but after that night we now errect a 24'x24' tarp over the top which ensures dryness but also keeps the whole lot cool with the bonus of the truck fitting under as well!

Whatever you do don't get a electric cooler/heater 'fridge' as these draw about 5amps and will chew through battery and don't really cool that well. Just take an esky for shorter trips.

Oh and get good sand pegs as well. Steel ones are useless in sand which you may have noticed WA is completed made up of

Have fun out there. We're having such a ball on our round oz trip that we're going away again the weekend we get back!!

Oops forgot to mention the Australian Camping Bible 5th edition which has all the free and cheaper camp sites in Oz. Get it!

Lake towernining is a top spot and not too far.

    All those ^^ are tops.
Shannon- Near Pemberton, heading towards walpole. Theres huts- its tops.
Hyden (ware rock)- caravan park is about the only option, aside from illegal nat park stuff
Logue Brook Dam near Harvey/ Wellingtom Dam near Collie
Warren River National Park near Pemberton- top facilities there.
Cervantes / Green Head / Ledge Point / Leeman: all similar- on the beach fishin/swimmin/kickin back. windy days will be a nightmare though.

When you get a tent, double the number of people you will sleep to find the size you need. If you have a 4WD, get a bin bag for your spare tyre. Buy a butane can powered stove- you can run them in your car when a cyclone rolls in.

Coalmine beach caravan park in Walpole have great little camping areas. Spent two weeks travelling camping the SW, went to Coalmine beach caravan park for a night, ended up staying for 4.

Curtin doesn't take you on nice fieldtrips?

Ninghan station (up Gt Northern Hwy, near Paynes Find) is one big structural feature (PM me if you want to know what it is, not going to post in case any 2nd years are lurking) in greenstone succession, you can figure it out nicely if you spend a couple of days walking each of the 3 hills around the homestead looking at outcrops- not the sort of thing I'd subject my gf to though.

Anywhere along the south coast from Augusta to Eperence you can find cool contacts between granites, gniesses and carbonate deposits.

Porongorups are good for big lumps of granite, Stirlings you can find some relict bedding features in the quartzites- pretty cool IMO.
