aWTK - Car Rear Windscreen Wipers...

Why do sedans with angled rear windscreens not have wipers but hatches/wagons with near-vertical rear windscreens do?

This does not make sense to me as water is more likely to 'sit' on the rear windscreen of a sedan than that of a hatch/wagon where gravity does its thing more prevalently.

    I am confuse.

Car manufacturers, Y U NO put wipers on rear windscreens of sedans?

Aerodynamics means that airflow generally follows the sedan body shape, and any water on the rear screen is blown off. For hatches etc the large angle from roof to window means that airflow doesn't continue over the rear window, so water will sit on the window until mechanically moved.

operate the pump and listen for the noise, id guess in the back of the car, i dont think they run off the front washer bottle for the rear wipers.

Some sedans have rear wipers. My version 6 sti has a rear wiper, but all the rest of the impreza line up dont ???

Some older cars have two reservoirs and two pumps- my old laser for eg, newer ones just pump it all from the front reservoir, like my current focus.

My Jeep pumps it from the front, so if it hasn't run out yet then it could have the same setup.....

I wish my ute had a wiper on the back window but it's not really practical with the size and shape of the window.

Vacuum wipers ... yeah. The biggest downpour could be dealt with going downhill while mere drizzle was dispatched intermittently when going uphill. Need washers? Drive on someone's verge while their sprinklers were on. Perfect ... almost.

I suppose that means you're old enough to remember the windscreen washers on the Volkswagen beetle powered by the air in the spare tyre too

Had a little Suzuki 4WD the washers were powered by a big squeeze rubber bulb on the dash. In a highly complex operation you pumped it.

^ My mate had a Mk1 Ford Fiesta in the uk which had a rubber bulb on the floor near the clutch. If you jammed all your weight on it hard enough, you could get the sprays to miss the windscreen entirely and go clear over the roof. Great for soaking unsuspecting people standing behind the car in carparks
