AWTK - Suspended from school. Punisment or reward?
I've always found the practice of punishing school kids by effectively giving them a holiday a little odd. Sure, in years gone by if you'd come home from school and told your parents you'd been suspended I dare say at the very least you've have a sore arse for the next few days and possibly been grounded. Things are a little different now of course with our overly PC society frowning upon parents dishing out that sort of punishment to their kids. So where is the punishment in it today? Or, is it simply a reward for poor behaviour? Is detention a better way?

I was put on detention, in the 'contract room' (a room on my loansome with just a piece of paper to write what i did wrong), suspended and expelled.
The worst was the contract room. Detention isnt so bad given there are other people there.

You used to have to do Scab Duty ( Do gooders said it was Inhumane)
Then Write Lines ( Do Gooders complained again )
Then Sit in another room by yourself ( do Gooders complained again )
Now they send them home cause THEN they Are NOT the schools responsibilty.!!
Do Gooders Have a Lot to Answer for, and Now the same Do Gooders are just Passing the Buck onto the Parents cause its easier.
The Kids either stay home all day watching telly, playing games.. or go out and break into peoples houses and destroy stuff.
Great Move Do Gooders !!!

Writing lines was a pain, we learnt something from that. Scab duty, too, was a pain - worse because we could see everyone else enjoying recess or lunch. We learnt something from that too. The cane and the waddy both hurt - hurt the hands, hurt the ego. We learnt a lot from that. And we learnt it fairly often.
Admittedly, a lot of what we learnt was: "Don't get caught". But these kind of punishments drilled into us a half reasonable understanding of what was and wasn't on to that society, and taught us that flouting the laws and societal norms would generally have undesirable consequences - even if it took a while for it to catch up on us.
This is a good thing.
Suspension? The one time I got suspended (this was 20 years ago or more) I was doing some part time work doing flyer layouts and other computy stuff. One week suspension meant one week I got to work full time - made $400! What did I learn there? Just how much being at school sucked.

After school detention was a bitch.
Saturday morning detention was a bigger bitch.
Suspension = sitting at home in front of beach/television/computer with disgruntled parents to deal with at dinner. A bit like wagging school, but with a purpose.

A reward? Surely that is for the parents discretion, where those decisions should be, not in the hands of the school, whose primary concern is educating large groups of children and "shudder" teenagers.
But then again school is not for learning it is cheap day care for slack self centred parents isnt it?

Yep, making the parents responsible for their kids behaviour, thats terrible, how dare they!!
yes, it's a holiday...but i'd rather my kid goes to school and gets educated by a teacher, rather than that teacher have to deal with a snot nosed arsewipe with an attitude problem disrupting the class. If the parents let that snotnosed arsewipe play video games and get away with it, then thats up to the parents. our schools should not be defacto parents.
i got suspended once, and i was made to spend the time moving 2000 house bricks from one side of the yard, and then back again. staying at school and keeping my mouth shut was the far easier option.

I Meant.. Instead of the kids being made to do Stuff at School as a Punishment, the Schools send them home.
Its the Parents responsibility to Control their kids and NOT the schools.
Its the Do gooders that Stopped All the In School punishments.
I had respect for All My teachers. If I was a little Shit I got Punished at School in front of everyone whether it was Scab Duty or Isolation , Then Copped it from My Mum when I got Home.
Lesson Learnt.

The biggest problem is that the kids miss classes when they are suspended. Making a blanket generalisation here, but I bet the kind of kids who tend to get suspended are probably the last ones who can afford to miss classes. So all it achieves is getting those kids further behind, which causes them to be even less interested and then they play up more....getting them even further behind. So i dont see it as effective at all.

On a similar note,
Is being banned from psb a punishment or reward.
Is it worse being put on mod approve or denied all together?
I say mod approve is worse.

What is "extremely bad" in your eyes.
If you were running a forum, what would it take for you to ban someone..?

I don't know a lot of parents. I know a few. I hear about a lot from the media who I trust to be fair and unbiased as much as far as the next Joe trying to get attention to make money.
I refuse to believe that parents are less concerned with their children being sent home from school than their parents were.
