    BWTK: CAT 3516 series engines

So, PSB has a lot of Westrac employees, plus a bucketload of industrial and mining folk.
Hoping I can get some pointers in a small venture.

I know of a CAT3516 series engine for sale. 10hrs total time, and that was at the hands of Westrac Sydney for Warranty re-cert.
Also a used 3.3KV generator and a heap of spares to go with it.
I have heard the lead time for new can be up to 12months...

What information would a buyer want/need to know about the unit to purchase it?
Obviously price, freight terms, serial number... those are standard things.
What information specific to the CAT engines?

And yes, once I clarify its availability and info, I will be trying to sell it.
If you don't want to say it open, please PM me.

    Cheers.

I don't know much about the 3516, we use mainly 3406's in our rigs and generator units
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

If it was an older engine, I'd want to see its oil analysis history. 10 hrs, though, doesn't sound too bad.

I'd also be interested to know if it was a back-up genset. Standing for months/years and then firing up wide open is fairly brutal treatment for any engine.

Cheers for the info. AFAIK, it was a backup/spare/never used from the Nauru detention centre. The Nauru govt got handed the lot when it closed, and flogged it all off because they had no use for it.

The 10hours were at the hands of Westrac for calibration after it was brought back to Oz.

    Hey Breyten

Check the oils and the coolants - we use a lot of 3516s in gensets on offshore support boats and the like... If she has been parked for all that time in a tropical area, you might want to look for condensation in the sump... and have a look at the front end linkages if its had a generator hanging off it (alignment). Thes donks are pretty forgiving though...

    Brey,

SOS history would be very good if you can get it. If you wanted a new 3516 it probably could be done but the C175 is the replacement donk now. About 6 months if you order currently. If you can't get SOS history then oil and coolant sample about $50 would be worthwhile and I'm assuming if it went to NSW they have changed the filters. The old filters should be obtained if possible to check for metal.

I'd say that is a 3.3 KW not KV which is a high output generator.

warranty recert?? I'm thinking a certified rebuild which would be pretty much complete rebuild.

now what do you want it for? buying and reselling or actually to hire out?

So the 3516 has now been replaced in the lineup with the C175?

I can see there is a bit to make sure I know about this one.
    Viper,
    Selling on commission/consignment arrangement.
I have been told it is still sitting in a corner, and am just confirming now.

heh, I think it is a B series.

It's for Africa, so they like having the old stuff, as they have all the spares on the shelf already.

B series are tough as nails anyway barfy ... still got some truckies who won't leave em ... like an old 202 holden motor

that's correct Brey ... Could probably still get a 3516C though if we were to go to CAT.

Do you know how many hours it'd done before we did the rebuild? Did we do a total rebuild?

Breyten, the basic info any perspective buyer will want would include the exact model, engine & generator serial numbers and arrangement numbers, along with the current SMU reading (hours). Any documented service history detailing the interval hours & work performed is always a big plus, along with SOS results (Scheduled Oil Analysis) - regardless of the fact that the unit has only 10 operating hours on it, it should have been serviced on a time factor, not operating hours. If you are planning to on-sell it, just make sure that you are very clear on the fact that it is being sold as is, where is with no warranty (implied or otherwise). If one of these babies go bang, it can be very expensive and I doubt you would want someone coming back to hit you up for any repair costs.
