BWTK: Cool Stuff to do in Bali

So..... when we were booking flights, Thailand was too dangerous..... wot wif the red shirt rioting and wot not, so we booked 2 weeks in Bali. (was cheapest option)

We've booked a hotel for 5 nights in Kuta, and then 5 nights in Nusa Dua (peninsula to south east of Kuta) for 5 nights. That leaves a few days to do some exploring....

Bunyack wans to know..... what's worth doing up there??? we wouldnt mind traveling to a smaller island and staying there before getting back to the airport by 16th of July to get back to Perth.

Head North to Ubud for more cultural/jungle type stuff or catch a boat East to Lombok (Sengiggi and the Gili Islands) for a less raped-by-tourism feel. Could try Uluwatu as well if you are down near Nusa Dua as well.

Rafting is worth a go, cruisey day with food and beer.

I also liked the cycle down the volcano, was a fairly relaxed sorta day too, saddle soreness is erased by alcohol.

Say g'day to Jules_1972 when you're up there, he'd love to hear from me

how reliable is the transport to get over to Lombok???

forgive my ignorance..... whats the best way to get there?? air?? boat??? what's the price to get over there???

the missus and I havent planned the last 4 days, we figured we'd find some things to book once we got there, but I'd rather have a fair idea of what/how we could spend the last few days.

It is about $60-80 to fly (with some random local carrier)
You can either take the fast boat or slow boat, one is fast and expensive, the other is cheap and takes the whole day.
    Transport is reasonably reliable.

There are normally some packages that include fast boat, return and hotels for however long you want to go.
Ubud is meant to be quite nice and you could probably get away with just spending 4 days up there.

Lembongan Island is great if you just want to kick back and relax.
Only about 4 miles off, access by yacht, ferry or fast boat.
Ubud. Awesome scenery, great food, etc, BUT, the dread wearing,
lentil smoking freaks 'discovered' it a couple of years ago.

Ubud is nice, if you can get a package deal for white water rafting and ATV riding in the one day. You get to see a fair bit of the island, we went as far up as kintamani, its really beautiful once you get away from everything.

    Avoid the monkey forest

oh yeah, and waterbom park, do it, in fact, do it twice

and take the missus to Dempasar to Robinsons? i think, a big department store like myer, has one whole floor of womens shoes.

The elephant rides pretty cool! Not something you get to do everyday that's for sure. Ubud is really nice!! There's the water park too! and shopping!

DO NOT RENT A SCOOTER!!! imho

Also only use blue taxis! the other ones will rip u off. You can pay to have a driver for the day and they'll take u whereva u like. our guy was really nice took us to his village to see his brother and fathers carving shop, they did a good deal for us (apparently) and he took us to this place where they make coffee AMAZING views but be careful because if the driver is originally from bali - good driver. If he is not originally from bali - BAD driver!!! We had a guy not from bali, he ran ova a dog and nearly hit a child! NOT fun!!

As opposed to the boardie wearing, singlet-toting, swearing, trashy and inconsiderate bogans who 'discovered' Kuta and surrounds a couple of decades back as a cheap holiday where they could spend their time in hotels, shopping and getting drunk whilst surrounded by a bunch of other people from Perth?

    YES!

We always hire a scooter in Bali, there really is nothing to worry about.
Unlike Perth drivers, Bali drivers will watch out for you, and allow you space to turn etc, if need be.

    Things to do.
Go to Tanah Lot and watch the sunset over it, walk over to it, and for a small donation be blessed.

Go to WaterBom (note the spelling), good fun, but a bit pricy.

Do lots of shopping, if you don't want to bata, i can give you a few fixed price shops that are very cheap for clothes etc.

Take the missus to some of the big department stores, like Matahari or Care Four, very cheap real original stuff, i bought levi jeans for $20 australian.
Missus always buys make-up and perfume from the department stores.

When you catch a taxi, only get in a bluebird taxi (has a bird on it), they are the most honest and reliable, also have great air-con.

If you need a driver, i can give you a guy we always use, has his own brand new air-con van.
We usually use him on shopping days, he will drive you around, and wait for you while you shop.
Usually a whole day with him is less than $40 aussie.

If you like wood carved products etc, go to Geneva, you will pay 1 third the price of stuff you would pay on the streets (Geneva is where the street vendors buy from).

If you do wish to get a tattoo, i can also give you a place that is awesome, i get all my tattoos done there (getting another in august when we go again).

Last tip, if you want to know anything Bali related, go do a search at this website, my missus lives on this website.

I like Seminyak, good bars, restaurants, clubs etc etc.
Ubud is nice, Monkey Forest is pretty neat.

I rent a scooter everytime I go, excellent cheap mode of transport...
Just take International Drivers License (RAC).

Lombok is brilliant, Sengiggi Beach has plenty accomodation etc etc.
