Dilema
Found a book in Thailand
The Bartimaeus Trilogy - I purchased book one - The Amulet Of Samarkand (that is free to anyone that wants it)
Since I am a tight arse, I HATE buying new.. when it will take me one day to read its just not good $ wise.
Would anyone have "The Golem's Eye" and "Ptolemy's Gate" by Jonathan Stroud aka Book 2 & 3
ps..Morgs, I left the little red dog book to be returned with a prezzie by the gals here while I was on leave.. n they DIDNT RETURN IT I shall venture to the torture lady when it stops raining.

2 books at the moment:
"Superclass - The global Power Elite and the world they are making" - By David Rothkopf
An interesting take on just how insignificant we all are, and what sort of things the 1000 most powerful/influential people in the world (by definition - those 1 in 1 million) get up to. About halfway through - rather riveting. Is written by a guy who used to work as a national security advisor for the US government (amongst other things), and has been in close contact with a fairly large number of "key players" as far as the global power network goes.
Amazon.com: Superclass: The Global Power Elite...
"The Commission : The Uncensored history of the 9/11 investigation" - by Philip Shenon
Haven't read enough of this one to comment much yet only the preface/chapter 1 about Sandy Berger. Supposedly the book goes into prior knowledge about a terrorist attack, clinton's orders to try kill bin laden, and possible cover-up activity influencing what the commission could examine.

Haha, they were probably too scared to go anywhere near the torture chamber! There is no rush, and definitely no need to get wet. (And no need for prezzie, just happy that someone else gets some use out of it).
Back on topic:
I have just finished "The Forgotten Children" by David Hill. It is about underpriviledged children from the UK, being sent to Farm Schools in Pinjarra and Molong (NSW), amongst other places.
The things that went on made me cringe, and it is hard to believe that such places existed in what is relatively recent history (1930s - 1970s).
This would be an ideal book to give your children to read, when they are feeling 'hard done by' because you have refused to buy them the latest $200 Nikes that they absolutely must have.

I'm a bit behind, but not long ago, I read the newest from Chuck Palahniuk (until this comes out, anyway), Rant: The Oral Biography of Buster Casey

If you like his other stuff, you'll like this one
Rant is the hero of the story, and the book is made up of portions of interviews with those around him. Like in his other books, there's some weird shit going on, the least weird being Rant's special ability - it's like that of a palm reader, but... vaginas
I can't really try to explain it, but if you like Chuck, you'll like this book

Another one I've read was a re-read for me, but I did a bit of a write up for my old website first time around.
Quote:
I've started reading (damn near finished) a new book that apparently "took Russia by storm" and was translated to english for my reading pleasure. It is Headcrusher and it's actually written by a pair of russkies, Alexander Garros and Aleksei Evdokimov, or Garros-Evdokimov. It's about Vadim, an average guy living in Riga, Latvia that is having trouble adjusting to his country's new-found love of capitalism. He sees trend-i clones walking around everywhere and decides he could do it too. So he goes to work for a major bank and it all seems to be going well until he snaps and kills his boss. Next bit is a little spoilerish. A security guard who knew about it tries to blackmail Vadim so he kills him too. Then it all goes downhill as he goes crazy and kills more. Here's part of a dream he has where he is talking to the image of himself he has been seeing in mirrors that is him but part reptile. They are discussing how the internet is really just a diversion from the development of the human race that is distracting us from making real progress. Simple version: Internet = Pwned.
Quote:
|
"In fact the putrefied sublimational essence of the Net is best demonstrated by the Net itself. What makes up the overwhelming - overwhelming! - majority of information posted and circulated on the Net? Porn. Naked bums and tits," (the reptile slapped his furniture in agreement)" (The Reptile-Vadim is lying on a couch made of "a whole gang of unmistakable mega-whores") ""by the bale, the tonne, the gigabyte. Seventy percent of total traffic. And of the other thirty percent, twenty percent is just plain NONSENSE. Nonsensical forums. Ludicrous chat rooms. Texts that are a total waste of space. A meaningless mish-mash of weak-witted wordage. Just think about it: for centuries now, ever since humanity invented scientific and technological progress for itself, since about the time of the Renaissance, it's been scrabbling, clawing, clambering it's way towards the Internet. And there it is, the crown of evolution, the first global, instant, free, uncensored means of communication in the history of Homo Sapiens, an inexhaustible reservoir of knowledge, a planetary nervous system... A portrait, cast from our own selves, so to speak. A generalised portrait. And what face do we see in it? The face of a mentally retarded, juvenile sex maniac. A lewd idiot. Congratulations! Humanity, my friend, I'm Proud of you!"

@ sentry - "zen" was an interesting story of some crazy guy going crazy again. Had some interesting viewpoints.
Best of all, though, and regardless of whether you agree with Pirsig, it was a decent read and got the reader thinking about stuff. I like it when a book does that.
Currently going oldskool and jumping between Sun Tzu and Asimov's Foundation trilogy.

Cap: I must admit, I had a change of heart after that last post. Its a good read.
***SPOILER***
However most of 'Phaedrus' theories are based on Emmanuel Kants. If you can stomach it (its a very hard read), Critique of pure reason is a good read; a real eye opener

Thanks for the heads up Bendito, I love Chuck, the last thing I read of his was Diary. If you are a fan check out Brett Easton Ellis's 'Lunar Park'.
The Chuck Palahniuk doco is a good show, it follows his roadshow at universities around.
Currently reading 'Terminate with Extreme Prejudice' by Richard Belfield. Hints and tips and history of assassination.

Loved all of BEE's stuff except for Lunar Park
Just seemed to go nowhere, like he sat down to write and vent on all his own crap, someone found it and started to sell it as his new best seller

Apparently I'm a geek just because I have in front of me 1,127 pages of Volume 7 of Encyclopedia of Electronic Circuits by Rudolf Graf & William Sheets.

Big Shots
Think "Underbelly" condensed. The back stories and lead ups to the Melbourne gangland wars. Includes info from the past century on the who's who of Melb's underground as well as Carl Williams and Tony Mokbel's inclusion in it all.
About halfway through and it's a good read that I'd thoroughly recommend.
