    Chivalry in the modern age

With the recent cruise ship disaster, and reports of men knocking over women and children to get to lifeboats first, I've been wondering about chivalry in the modern age.

Is the notion of 'women and children first' an out-dated concept with the inception of equal rights for both sexes? Obviously in a 'Titanic' style situation, you would reasonably assume children, the elderly and the disabled would go first.

But what about the remaining able-bodied women and men? Equal rights (first in gets saved) or women first and men after?

Is it unusual I consider the idea of women and children first still applicable to the modern man?

    Discuss.
A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin.

Dear god, it's some weird bastardized three wheeled two person go-kart.

Chivalry and sexism are not linked.
Feminism is about opportunity and respect.
Chivalry is about respect and reverence.
While it's true some men claim their lack of chivalry is born out of the feminist push for equality - that's simply a cop out.
Chivalry is relevant to modern times, and the only people who believe otherwise are doing so for personal convenience.

Chivalry isn't dead, opening the door/buying dinner etc. is something i do regularly.

In reference to the OP though, in a life or death situation i would like to think that i would put women and children first, but i have never been in that situation.

I think children first because they have their lives ahead of them. Perhaps parents of young children.

For me family is more important than chivalry. My kids need a father and a mother and my wife needs a partner, so like the post above. Once they are in the life boat I am sitting right beside them!! plus once in the boat who says they are safe? I would stay with them regardless of any traditions or even laws to make sure they stay alive.

    Chivalry = Chauvinism.

Two sides to the same coin, where men treat women differently to other men, better at doing some things, not as good at other thing, worthy of respect and deserving of special care in their treatment.

Chivalry isn't dead, but blame Germaine Greer and her lot for giving that murder a red hot go.

I'll still open doors, ladies first, etc. I get funny looks these days but when we're washing down and unloading the boat I'll usually assign the girls on the boat and the boys on the ground, less heavy lifting for the girls.

Am I a chauvinist? Absolutely. Am I also, to some extent, chivalrous? I like to think so - sometimes - but fortunately Germaine has given me the option to treat a useless cunt as a useless cunt regardless of their gender.

    Women and children first, btw.

But help some dancer, model type onto the life raft and you're definitely in. Well, at least doing better than the Captain was with her 30 minutes before she needed to jump in a life raft.

    This.
I love the fact my wife appreciates that I am a chauvinist, there is still a place in today's society for "the 50's" style relationship.
I also think women are getting more receptive to being treated how they should be treated.
I'm all for equality, but you're still a woman.

From a purely objective point. Why old people? They've had their turn as it were, wouldn't able bodied types be better able to assist the women & children? Not what i believe but I've thought about it before.

im pretty impressed with what i have read

im a girl and as much as i like being treated 'equal' i am a girl who doesnt mind being a bit 'old' fashioned and being treated with a little extra care eg have a door opened for me, a guy helping me by pushing my bike backwards for me etc

i have no kids but i would always put kids first and a parent to ensure they have the best care taker in that situation.

Good on you Huntsman, you are a true Gentleman!

Chivalry to me is also about good old fashioned manners, and it is so refreshing when you come across an act of chivalry/manners. I was coming back from the city just before Xmas with a work friend and her partner, both in their mid 50's on the train which was choc a block. Two young guys, early 20's gave up their seat for my friends.

The seats in front of my friend & her partner was occupied by an obese lady who sat sideways and had her legs propped up on the second seat so no one could sit there.

Not that this has anything to do with getting folks off a sinking ship, just my 2pennies worth of what I think to chivalry...Guys, it is very much appreciated, doesn't go unnoticed by us women and it's refreshing to know some people do still believe in the age of chivalry!

I open doors and stuff, but not just for women. I will hold a door for a whole crowd if I get there first...

As for pushing girls bikes back for them, I actually won't until they have tried and failed, or it's a no brainer that they won't be able to...

They need to learn to do it themselves or learn to park better so assistance isn't required, a man may not always be around...

I tripped and fell into the raft...

I was brought up that a gentleman opens doors, walks on the roadside of a path and always on the lower side of the stairs. I got asked "Do I look disabled to you?" once when opening a door for a lady at work. It took a while to open doors again...
Remember half the cagers out there are below average drivers...

chivalry & manners are old fashioned terms. These days they're referred to as courtesy & decency.
And that should apply to everyone.

As for the boat captain, It goes deeper than that; Conduct unbecoming. He was negligent & irresponsible of people in his charge.
He & the cruise company will be made accountable. The surviving passengers will make sure of it.

Men have been pissing whilst standing up since the beginning of the human race.

Every day, we aim and deposit into something about 35cm wide (toilet bowl).

So, when it comes to putting something into a gap 2.5 metres wide, it is suddenly relatively very simple (parking space).
One owner. Only driven gently on Sundays. Sold to best offer. First to see will buy. Reward offered for safe return. Coming soon to a cinema near you. Available for a limited time only.

My waterbed broke this morning. Oh, I don't have a waterbed. Bugger.
