So, (sorry agrid) the silly execution thread by McGoo has prompted me to post an awesome thread. With a pole.
Let's be honest. One of the bestest bits of watching AFL is not the speed, skill, agility, coordination or training of these superb athletes. It's the fights. Most now pretend to be all "oh no, that's just not on" because of the filthy little PC fagparade but inside we're all (?) transported back to the playground and the chant of "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT". No wonder that movies like "Fight Club" are so popular, they call something dark inside us and for a little while we can be comfortable with that. No wonder UFC is so popular, despite its glitzy fakeness.
Now think of the old colosseum / gladiator style entertainment. Not the way they did it - slaves getting butchered - but more in the style of athletes being extremely well paid to go out and find who can beat the guts out of the other. Or of rollerball. Or of WAFL 20 years ago.
Depending, of course, on the boundaries - who would or wouldn't go to watch a 'game' at least once? Would it make a difference if it was to first blood or thunderdome style "two men enter, one man leaves"? Would you participate as a contestant?
