CWTK: Larger capacity Bikes suitable for new riders

My son has his RE and will be up for his open class next Feb. He will soon be jumping on my Firestorm (if my blood pressure can cope) to start preparing. Currently on a KLR250.

I have advised him to maybe not go straight to the sports bikes and get something a little more manageable to build his experience on and he is happy (I think) to listen to Dad's advice.

Question: We are looking for a good all rounder, what is out there?

Preferrably something I can still hand his arse to him on for a couple of years.

I think the gsxf 650 is a good starter still quick enough to get in trouble personaly like the sport tourer riding position bet more manageable that full sports bike.

Yamaha FZ6/FZ8, Suzuki SV650, Kawasaki Z750, Honda CB600, Ducati 696 Monstor..... All decent larger capacity machines with comfortable ergonomics, as well as being less susceptable to big $$$$$ costs in the case of minor drops etc.

Z 750 would be a fairly good transition from the KLR.

What's he got his eyes set on?

Is the Ninja 650R the new replacement for the ER6? The ninja is a little less... uhh... different looking.
I'm starting to suss out options for my next bike, was also considering the FZ6 and VFR750, but leaning towards an SV650 at the moment.
"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all"

ER6n (naked) is still called ER6n
ER6f (faired) is now called Ninja650
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

the 650 ninja is marketed in some other markets as the ER6F.
they are much the same bike as the versys, ER6N, and the 650 ninja
good little bikes for what they are.

    Yes...

So the OP gives/sells Firestorm, which he already says the kid is going to get to ride, and buys himself a faster bike to "hand his arse to him for a couple of years"

Robwas was running low 11s on his Firestorm...

And Sprint, well if you've ever tried to keep up to him in the country, you will know what they are capable of in the right hands...

Genius! Sell him the tourer, which I can borrow for trips away with the wife and get myself something to try and keep up with the FHRC missiles of Mr S and cohorts without merging with the scenery or seizing my back up. In spite of it being Dad's old bike Im gonna work on that angle.

He was drooling over R6 Yammies, which kicked my parental instincts into overdrive. I have told him that I believe he is better off easing into higher performance machines to better enjoy their capabilities. Again the Storm has good power delivery is comfy for us larger fellas and I find it handles quite nice, yes Ghetto, I think it handles nice.

    New question;

What should I be looking at? Can of worms has now been opened.

There were about 9 recycled pints on his jeans that were left on the back lawn this morning when I headed off.

    Looks like one of these

    Slept with one of these

Will put it on the list, need to work on his Mum a bit more first as well, I've got till February 2012.

A large capacity Motard, gets up his skills like nothing else on this earth ever could... he'll be scaring himself shitless with every sideways corner and if he disappears into the scenery he'll most like be pulling himself and his bike out in fits of laughter as the total speeds achieved on these things isn't so high.
The universe likes speed. Don't delay. Don't second guess. Don't doubt. When the opportunity is there, when the impulse is there, when the intuitive nudge from within is there, act.

Kawasaki 1998/99 ZX6, fairly easy riding position and pretty nippy still, with a bit of poke, nice easy bike for a new R class rider, plus you can pick them up Cheaply. I reckon he'd (you'd) get one for $3.5-4.5k

This, or the 750. I reckon him getting the firestorm and you getting a new toy is also a pretty damn good idea.

If you like nice lazy power than can still handle and tour, a busa is always an option.
