CWTK - when is the last time you washed.....

Today while I was putting my helmet on I noticed that the tag inside was brown instead of the pearly white it was when I bought it. This got me thinking as to when was the last time that I washed the inserts in my helmet.........never actually and I bought my current helmet 2 years ago, gross I know

So, when was the last time you washed the padding inserts inside your helmet?? Do you wash them on a regular basis??

once in the year I've had the latest helmet. Wasn't stinky, just thought it could do with a clean.

    You can clean em?

Wow, the new things they come up with these days.

    I normally just look into my helmet, then break out in verse;

    Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
    Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence.
Intelligence and education are three sides of the same coin.

I've got a theory, that nobody else can stand your stench as well as you can.

So a helmet that you can (just) cope with will make anybody else's eye water and their stomach turn, thus making your helmet less attractive to thieves.
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

I've been riding almost daily in some way or form (road, dirt, racing) for about 7 years now, so believe me when I say that the ULTIMATE in stinky helmets is created from taking a helmet to Darwin and racing for 4 days in the ASBK in which you sweat constantly and the humidity ensures everything stays wet.

That helmet fucking stinks. The dog tries to roll in it. I retch when I put the fucker on. It literally grew mould in it in Darwin.

But no, I haven't cleaned it.

Why clean it when you can buy a new one?

I've had mine a year now and haven't done it yet. Is it like pillows though, where they're great until you wash them, then they go all lumpy? Or have I just got crappy pillows, or a Mrs who bites them too much???

^^Yep, just chuck em in with the leathers.

Not really. I use soap flakes mixed up with water and then throw it into the helmet, squeeze it through the liner, rinse thoroughly and then leave it in front of a fan with vents and visor open or just in the breeze, can take two days to dry in winter. Obviously If you have removeable liners remove them first and wash them seperately.

Had my helmet for nearly a year and never cleaned them.

Don't intend to in the near future either, don't see the need.

BTW if your head is stinking up a storm in your helmet you probably want to get help for that, or wash your face and hair more regularly.
    Its all good.

Everyone Most humans have oils and acids secreted by their body and hair follicles, these build up in the liners of helmets, these then break down the foam and reduce the lifespan of the helmet. Washing the helmet, especially after summer will extend the life of the helmet and maintain the integrity of the liners in the unfortunate ocurrence of having to use the safety capabilities of said helmet.

For those of us without unlimited budgets and who actually do longish rides in all weather conditions, washing your helmet is a good idea.

Another interesting bit of info is to not leave your helmet sitting on the filler cap of the fuel tank as the key hole is usually a vent and the fumes can deteriorate the polystyrene liner, which you will not know about until you need it.
