DWTK - Changing your religion for love

    Dear PSB,

Firstly, this has nothing to do with me personally, i'm just curious to see if this happens a fair bit and hear other peoples POV and stories.

I have a couple of mates that before they got married, converted to the religion of their girlfriends. One catholic, the other Islam.

I was chatting to the guy that converted to Islam the other day and basically he said that he didn't think his wife's parents would have let him marry her if he didn't convert, so he did what he needed to do to convert. No pork or booze, etc.

I get the impression from these guys that there wasn't any pressure from the partner, but more expectation from the parents of the partner.

if you were with a girl and decided she was marriage material would you convert to her religion to get the blessing of her parents or do you think the parents should accept you for who you are and what you believe in if your partner accepts you for who you are?

is it an immigrant family thing?

I have never been that in love that I would marry someone so maybe I'm not fit to comment. Perhaps if I meet someone who I want to marry my stance will change but this is how I currently feel.

I would definitely not change my religion (none) to marry someone. Even if I faked it I don't think I could pull it off as I find the major religions laughable (I don't know enough about the others really). I doubt I could get to the stage of wanting to marry someone that religious however, it would surely have caused conflict in the relationship before then. I've had religious girlfriends, I don't object to them believing whatever they want but if they were super-serious about it then I imagine it would have caused a break-up before we got to the marriage stage (no relationships have ended due to religion yet).
Is such a thing even possible?

That's a tough one. I'd have to say it would completely depend on the circumstances, but...

    Would I ever? Yes, possibly.

Would I be likely to? No.

I think its totally fucking wrong to expect someone to change their religion to suit your own family.

A choice is a choice, but I think it's unwise. If any sort of pressure was applied, I think it would be all shades of wrong. I think that would be a bad start to a marriage.

    No.

I'm not going to subscribe to anybody's imaginary friend scheme in order to get laid.

Sounds like its more about marriage than sex.

Quick answer would be no. Religion is about your beliefs, not some one elses.

May the force be with you

    That and that...

But there is a long lead up time to the marriage so you would think it would already have been thought about and discussed...

But like Sventek said it's not a healthy start to a life long committment...

I wondered what the stupidest thing I'd hear today would be.
