DWTK: They don't make'm like they used to...

Pretty well exactly what the title says, what do you frequently find that they just don't make'm like they used to?

I'll start off - I love going to Sunday markets, because I can buy your conventional tools (sockets, spanners, stilsens etc.) for a little cheaper and I know they'll last thrice as long! Seriously, I don't know if its cheap Chinese steel, over oxidized or maybe it's not even steel, but I managed to break a wheel brace the other day just undoing a damned nut whilst my mate got it off with his 10yr old brace. (Note: I've heard Kingchrome is the exception to this rule)

Also, kitchen utensils, I've gone through so many peelers and can openers lately, whilst my old lady has the same ones she had in the 70's!

I'm with Spartacus on the coppers thing.
Nearly every consumer electronic device, built in obsolescence and desire/need to have the latest obsolescence.

What I hate is not so much the 'don't make 'em like they used to'. It's more the complete lack of development in the last 50 years, take the humble toaster, nothing's fucking changed, we've got a Large Hadron Collider, but regardless of making numerous minuscule adjustments my toast is never consistently browned.

not so much they don't make em like they used to, but it seems every market it saturated so much with cheaper alternatives, the decent stuff becomes "boutique".

    my toaster works fine.

    Of course.

Our ancestors had to survive, our descendants just need to conform. End of story.

    True.

Bad a different skillset is required for "survival" these days.

Kingchrome. They used to be cheap crap. Nowadays people tell me they are good tools.

Sidchrome. They used to be excellent quality. Nowadays people tell me they aren't quite as good as they used to be.

Why on earth we need a setting that equates to "charcoal" or "listen to the smoke detector" is beyond me. Why not make the maximum realistic so there would be a better spread of selections remaining? We could also do with a toaster that toasts sides un-equally for crumpets and muffins
Back in the day of single sided toasters that hinged, this was easier.

When corporations became the norm rather than men like Bentley, Hans Wildorf of Rolex, Rolls and Royce or some great Americans like Eddison and Maxim running a company to their own high standards the chase for dollars became the religion of the corporate giant and quality became add on sales and market share.
A good example is Rolex, when the founder Wilsdorf, himself an orphan died his will gave the entire company to a for profit charitable trust.
All profits from the sale of Rolex are given to needy children and to worthy scientific endevours because no one can get rich from manipulating the quality of the watches it has remained high and consistent whilst its competitors cut corner after corner in the chase for shareholder satisfaction.
Maybe a thread to list the companies we still believe are turning out consistent quality for a fair price?
"There is more in heaven and earth that can be explained by your philosophy Horatio."
True, but if science had the funds religion has enjoyed for eons we might have better explanations by now, or at least hover shoes.

Inconsistently brown toast is a minor inconvenience - it could be worse if they did make a lot of progress:

Seriously never watched an episode. Might have to give it a go.
Better than the usual comparison to Jack Dee or Victor Meldrew I get from my wife.
