    FWTK - Lock picking

Heyo, for some time i've wanted to learn to pick locks. i don't want to steal shit, i just think it'd be cool to posses a james bond skill. i've seen lock pick guns, and i don't want any of that i want to use the proper tools. they seem readily available over the net; amazon and the like. but what i want to know, is it like buying bb guns, easy to get, not easy to own? is it legal to buy them? is anyone adept at it? any advice? flames et all?

I believe to possess some of the tools you need to be licensed but as you said you can get basic pick sets online anyway, just don't get caught carrying them around at 2am whilst wearing a hoodie and you should be sweet.

Locks are kind of cool, they beat the piss out of anything Rubick has ever come up with.

What is best in life? Troll the forums, see the threads derailed before you and hear the lamentations of the moderators.

Even with skills you can fuck about trying to open a lock. Why not posses a more bland skill of kicking in a door, or use a jack to horizontally apply pressure between the door jams then bash it in.

Or look under a rock or some stupid place to see where the owner leaves the spare key. Learn to think like the householder, where would I hide a spare key. Or master the art of climbing in through windows.

Next lesson escape and evasion techniques and how to get through police interrogation.

Get some old machine hacksaw blades, grind or file different key patterns (so do some research).

Funny thing about locks is that you can give the guy off the street a 'master set' of picks, and he will not be able to open a lock that a 'master' has just picked with something bitten off his thumbnail.
Intelligence and education are three sides of the same coin.

Huh, strange that two threads about this just popped up recently on here.

As far as legalities go, it's one of those things that I'm pretty sure you can be pinged for (I think you may only carry them if you have a legal reason to do so, which I'd take to mean you are a lockie), but as long as you're not flashing them around in public, no-one's gonna have an issue.

LockPicking101 was (circa a few years ago) the best LockSport forum I'd seen, you might wanna have a look in there.

There's no issue with importing them (picksets) though if you start thinking about autopicks or bypass tools, you may find someone starts asking uncomfortable questions.

I used to pick basic tumbler locks a few years back... I got some hacksaw blades and used a grinder to make a tensioner and a pick... I could quite easily pick a 5 pin tumbler in under a minute.. you get some hard ones and you get some easy ones, then it just takes quite a bit of practice.. picking my dads shed was awesome though

I bought a set of picks from locksmith.com or something like that. They came from the states, no dramas. The only thing is (as mentioned) they're classed as housebreaking tools, so just like a crowbar, if you're caught wandering the streets at 2am with them in your possession, you'll get charged, otherwise, all hunky dorey. Now that I have a set though, I have long found that just a screwdriver as a leverage bar and anything that will fit in the lock will do as tools. Ideally you're better off finding an alternative to picking the lock.

I've Been doing it for a while, can pwn pretty much any basic lock, security pins, mushroom pins etc make it much harder, high security locks are another level a cheap padlock usually equals less than 1 minute it is a good sport, I enjoy it, I use southord picks, check there site out, I bought one of there practice locks with security pins aswell for practice, used to have a nice tubular pick set aswell but lost that
Get a basic set from southord get a few cheap locks ( think padlocks from kmart first) and get into lock sports it is good fun, I love it and I am not a criminal

Cheap padlocks are usually easier to shim rather than pick.

Slimline can be better for padlocks, I have both slim and normal, slim are ok for bigger locks aswell but larger picks are no good in locks with smaller entries,

Make your own from street sweeper bristles and heat shrink... Our get the mpxs14 from lockpickshop.com then learn to make your own later lol.

aussie keyways are pretty tight, so euros are probably best.

I can pick locks! What is even more cool is that I made my own lock picks.

I get really pissed off that I have to pay the security guy to come around and replace the battery in our security system because the cabinet is locked and they keep the key. So I made my own lock picks and practised on an old Ford Laser door lock, took about 15 minutes to get the "feel" and one minute to break into the security box. I feel like James Bond.

Anyway, here are the picks I made out of a hacksaw blade, I tried the top and bottom one in combination but it turns out rocking the middle one on its own worked.
