    FWTK - Motorbike Knee braces.

    Heyo folks,

a while ago i fell off a pushie and broke my leg. i sliced off the bone underneath my PCL, had to have a knee recon and can even now only bend it 60`. my physio and doc reckon by christmas my knee will be just as strong as it was before i broke it. but i'm particularly keen to do this again.

a while ago in saw a knee brace in some bike shop in vic park. i'm pretty sure they were these ones: Habla Mx – Your complete source for Motorcycle Gear, Parts & Accessories

    but they cost about $1000

i'd happily pay a grand if they stop my leg being stuffed in an off. so has anyone ever tried them? or tried something similar? they look like they'd be a pain in the arse for short rides, but for spirited, rain riddled or long rides; they could be worth a look in. any suggestions? comments? abuse? the obvious "don't fall off" line?

    Fatty

I feel naked on a dirt bike without braces; I've saved many an injury because of them; they are that good.

If you have the cash that your 'happy' to part with and an injury to protect, buy them. I have the Thor ($150) type ones, they're ok for the price but you get what you pay for with this kind of thing. Mine are bulky and have big hinges like forest gump..

These are a better product by miles. Have you looked at the others in this bracket?

For road.. err, I probably wouldn't bother, but thats me. If it were me with a bung knee (and I wanted to ride dirt), I'd spend the cash on it if it meant I could ride again (if that is indeed the case).

Braces are different to knee protection. The asterisk ones are knee braces with armor.

They protect against hyper extension. What I have read is if the hyper extension is that severe, all the energy transfers to the femur and snaps it. This would probably never happen if you were road riding.

The thor ones are not braces, they are knee protection. They are pretty good value for money though. I read on another forum a few people had a problem with the thor ones cutting skin if hit on a certain angle when the moon is in it's second phase???

Totally, the Thor get up are quite a step down in protection (and hence price). Braces with armor makes them knee protection though right?

    Semantics I'm sure.

I should clarify that I thunk that the Askerix is the "better product by miles". Speshuly if you are looking for stability in teh knee.

sorry, should've been more clear. knee protection. i'm currently sporting a bit of a forrest gump look in one of these:

what i'm curious about is if anyone rides with something to protect their knees outside knee sliders.
Unicycle, do you mean something like this:

i figure that mostly i want to stop twisting. as it seems that a sharp knock and a little twist is what did my knee in (super low speed, very low imapct. big ass problems)

I think its esier to fix one big bone (femer) than all the shit going on in the knee.
Same as its better to snap a shin (tib/fib) than do an ankle.

i'd pay that. my knee's been down for about 9 weeks, i reckon a fib would be better by now and i'd probably end up with less muscle wastage... but... back on topic.

    Those me mine yes.

They will offer you good protection for the money but the twisting you speak of, is largely out of the scope of these puppies. A proper brace is the way to go in regards to proper support system.

What kind of riding do you do? Asterick are top shelf non-medical knee braces with armor. I think they will be over kill for every day riding as they take a good chunk of time to get on and off.

The femur is said to be one of the most painful breaks one can suffer. Knee braces move the force applied to the knee joint to the femur. Large amounts of force can result in breakage which can cause death. I have never heard of anyone dying from damage to ligaments.
