    GPWTK - Ethernet or wireless

My Ethernet adapter on my MB looks to have died. I have tried different cables and none will light up the wireless modem router, but when I plug those cables into another pc the line one light comes on as it should. I'm typing this on my wifes wireless laptop.
So which would be better, buy an Ethernet card and install that or go a wireless dongle type thing?

    cheers

The room that the router in is where my pc is.
Are the speeds the same as cable?

ethernet will always be quicker, but with wireless considering your in the same room wont notice the difference
no problem with reliability on either

Go ethernet, a card will be cheaper than a wireless dongle plus its better.

    MB = Apple MacBook?

MacBooks don't have any slots for additional cards. It's rare for an ethernet port to fail, unless it's been zapped (eg lightening strike in the area). In which case, home contents insurance might be an option, resulting in a replacement new MacBook.

If you have an external hard drive or a USB stick with at least 8Gb, then install a fresh Mac OS X on to it, and then boot up from that. If the ethernet port still doesn't work then it's a hardware problem. If the ethernet port does work then it's a software problem, and fairly easy to fix. I had something similar last week - couldn't get a MacBook Pro to Bluetooth connect with an iPhone. Re-started the MacBook Pro off an external drive and the Bluetooth worked, confirming that it was a software issue.

I'm crook in the guts so at this stage won't be working tonight (ie will be home). Gimme a call on 0418 922 500 if you want to swing by and we can try starting it from one of my drives - I have an external SSD drive that I use for such tasks.
One owner. Only driven gently on Sundays. Sold to best offer. First to see will buy. Reward offered for safe return. Coming soon to a cinema near you. Available for a limited time only.

My waterbed broke this morning. Oh, I don't have a waterbed. Bugger.

If I could, ethernet every time. Faster, more reliable, no interference from the neighbours, plus I get 100/1000MB per connection, not shared and halved between all my devices.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon! Press the brake foot as you roll around the corners, and save the collapse and tie up.

Good point. In the Apple world, MB = MacBook and MBP = MacBook Pro. Ah well.

If you want speed, and reliability....Go with ethernet.
If you want to be able to move around the house...Go with wireless.

    Hi
Yes mother board. And this is a pc in the same room that the router is, so it'll be ethernet card I think. I have a slot for one available.
    cheers
