    jump starting

My battery was flat so I tried jump starting [rolling start, 4th gear, pop the clutch].
Didn't seem to like it much, didn't start either.
Does the modern motorcycle do this or are you stuffed with a powerless battery?
    er... I have EFI, GSR600!

    battery's now on charge.....

I've always thought that the battery has to have at least a small amount of charge in it otherwise it wont work.

Personally I bump start in first but have been told many times 2nd is best.

I think thats because 1st seems to only lock the back wheel up, but some bikes wont go into second without the engine running.

but I'm sure sombody more knowlegable than myself will clear it up

Strap one of these to the back and give it a bit of a push. Watch out though, them afterburners are a little warm.

Total noob jump starting and I always wondered how the hell you can get the bike into second gear on bikes with neutral finder (Like our ZZR's) But then I saw gavin, rotating the back wheel while on the centerstand and changing all the gears while the bike was off, so there is the trick to get em into gear .

This would be the third killswitch problem in a week.

Second gear is the way to go, but if the plugs are fouled it isn't going to start. remove the plugs and use the starter to turn it over, with no compression this should work fine and check for spark, you will also be able to see if the plugs are fouled.

I've found the $40 portable jump starter works a treat for starting bikes and small cars that are being a little difficult.

if you've got a car or access to a car, just grab some jumper leads and get your bike started.

The only thing you need to know is how your bike is earthed. My understanding is VERY limited, but I gather if you bike is earthed to the frame, you put the negative lead to the frame/engine block. If you bike is earthed through the battery negative, then you can just attach it to the battery terminals.

Maybe look up your bikes workshop manual to check.

    killswitch?

    edit:
suzuki... could be clutch switch dodgy as well (don't think they'll crank without the clutch - and thus, its switch - being pulled in).

my RR was being a bit dodgy recently, was my killswitch (faulty - being ON but not working). opened it up, sprayed with WD40 goodness and its all good. if you ride in the rain, maybe try this on your kill/clutch switches and see if it helps.

If you turn ignition on, do you hear the fuel pump prime? If not, i'd be looking at the killswitch. If you do, i'd be looking at the clutch switch...

the rear wheel just locks in 2nd gear- 23.5 to 1 compression...... !

It's all good, 24 hrs on trickle charge, everything's workin' nice again.

Since I got a work car, I don't ride much [that's why she's for sale......]

2 strokers are much easier to push start (1st gear = easy... on rgv step forward 1 step and pop clutch) as you're talking 7:1 compression rather than 12-13:1...

my 600rr - second gear, a bit above walking pace, pop clutch.

no need to go any more than 10km/h or so... but that was with the battery so it couldn't quite crank over enough to start properly.... still had a bit of juice in it....

nah, the battery's recent. It just flattened due to infrequent use. I was on holiday in Sept and then busy at work since then= not much riding.
