    LWTK: Larceny in the workplace

For those not in the know, here's a cheeky working definition

So, lefty wants to know, what is an acceptible level of larceny in the workplace? Do you partake in it? Is accidentally keeping pens and pencils on your person a crime or just something that should be expected in the workplace? Is that notebook you take from the stationary cupboard always just for meeting notes? Will that old dusty laptop in the IT department that hasn't been turned on for 6 months really be missed?

We get management approval before writing off the laptops to take home... so im a good boy haha...

The manager may be one of my best mates mum but thats beside the point.

Pens and pencils are provided by work... I take one if I need to use it... occationally I forget and end up taking one home, ill generally bring one back the next time im in.

Meh no larceny per se, but I've snapped up a bunch of stuff that really shouldn't have been thrown out...

^WSS. Being mates with/being the manager certainly helps.

In the couple of workplaces I have worked at, it depends on the employer. If you are expected to work insane hours without overtime or time in leiu, then quite a bit of stationary goes missing/non work items are printed/photocopied/faxed and no one seems to care (the line stopped at the large boxes of blank paper)

If the company is good to you, people tend not to steal things.

As a general rule, the better it felt when you said it, the more trouble it's going to get you into.

My first employer was a very good "sponsor" of my race car, and my third employer provided much "assistance" with workshop furniture for my garage and lending of equipment for my home renovations.

The occasional fastener is fair game, but as far as it goes, I'm clean.

Mind you, the boss is cool, he let me wire up my car speakers in shielded decron (good stuff for low-current).

My policy is pretty much if I need something, I'll just ask "Hey, you mind if I nick a bit of xyz?"

That way, my ass is covered =P

What about failing to return tools when you leave a job?

Does that count as larceny, or is that OK?

If it's left over from the job and the client's already been charged for it, it's fair game in my book. Still always ask though.

Haha Wiggers, no they never even let me play with them when I was there - probably just as well.

Actually it was a more recent incident that came to mind when I looked through this thread.
