If you believe your watch defines who you are so much, then that in itself makes you fake and shallow.

You can strut around in your $5000 watch, whilst my $40 replica from asia looks near-on identical (minus a couple of very small points) and has all of the same features. 99% of the population will never get close enough to inspect - and only 5% of those will be able to figure its fake. I like those odds.

The very idea that a watch expresses who you are and tells a story about you is a little bit silly - yes, its a fashion statement - but at the end of the day... Its just a watch.

It tells the time and it can look good. I understand where you are coming from, but to spend anything over about $800 on a watch is ignoring design and functionality and just buying into a brand and 'look' associated with the watch. It doesn't change who you are and doesn't really affect how people think of you (with the exception of other watch snobs)

Yes, you are not defined by what watch you wear, clothes, car etc. I'd know that if I was wearing a $40 fake I would feel like I'd cheated myself and a fine watch maker out of their dues.

Watches can be seen as a status symbol obviously, you wouldn't want to shake hands with a head of state or successful business man and notice he was wearing a cheap swatch or a fake rolex.

Oh of course, but a student getting around in a 5k watch seems a bit different... its something I'm struggling to get my head around...

That I understand. The way I feel about nice watches (real ones) are to be earned as a nice reward for doing well, or given as gifts for special occassions. Until then make do with what you can afford that looks nice and functions.

    yeah, I agree.

I had a fake tag heuer carrera which was quite expensive for a replica and absolutely fantastic, fully automatic and everything. I then got a tag heuer monaco from Asia again - nice watch but never felt so bad about owning a fake because I was still a 'uni' student - but that all changed as soon as I graduated - felt like I really should have something 'real' seeing as I wasn't poor anymore

Finally went out and spent a few hundred on a reasonable watch as a reward to myself for graduating uni, feel a lot better wearing a 'proper' watch.

Bought a fake Tag Grand Carrera in KL last year, gorgeous design. It lasted a fortnight.

I've been in the market for a decent, high quality lifetime watch for several years now and just can't find exactly what I want. Trying to hard I think.

Next time I swing through Dubai, I'm a-shoppin' whatever I find

Bought a real citizen what, 6 months ago? Scratched to shithouse now. I was sad enough when I noticed the first scratch in the glass. I don't know what I'd do if I saw a scratch in a $1,000 watch (let alone $10,000) two or three weeks after I bought it.

As someone who collects watches I couldn't agree more.
I still believe in buying what I like the look of, not who made it.

I love some of the current Omega range (but adore some of their 50's and 60's classics), but can't stand most of what Tag make (but still adore the original (pre Tag) Heuer Monza), and one of my daily favorites is still a military style Seiko auto that cost me $100 5 years ago.

I like what I like, if no-one else likes them, I don't care, I never bought them to impress the neigbours (that's what the cars are for !!!)

I've never really gotten into watches. In this day and age everyone has their cell phone in their pocket..takes an extra 2 seconds most of the time to grab that out and have a quick look.

Although, I don't wear any jewelary either so I guess i'm not into the whole "look".

I used to be the same, but then I started working in an office / suit / worker drone - started wearing one all the time. It almost becomes part of the office dress code really.

Totally. I got a £20 Lorus about 6 years ago and I would buy it over and above almost any Heuer, Tag, Rolex or pretty much any make I can think of. It's a simple black face with silver arms and silver numbers, it's all I really want and it's a small size which is good for my girly wrists. It tells the time and works well, not saying I wouldn't but a more expensive one if I had the money, but if I couldn't find one I liked, I'd still wear my good old Lorus.

Is Dubai cheap for watches, last time I went through it seemed to be the same price as Perth.
That's why I buy from collectors on sites like Timezone.com, much cheaper than retail, mint condition, full boxes and papers, and you can search out exactly what you want.

    That's OK, I have 2.

I have had my Omega seamaster 120 since 1986, still going strong a quality movement will keep accurate time and last a long time.

    2:Whats the lap record.

Who says that because I like expensive watches that I am fake and shallow? My watch does not define me so much, it's only a choice of mine. If that is your assumption, then it says more about you than it does about me. but i can see how youd think that way, so its ok...

the statement "fake watches are for fake people" is just another quote that watch enthusiasts say. I am not declaring you are a fake person though, so if you read it that way and got offended by it, then you shouldn't be offended if you are not. And if you didn't then that's good, you're not!

People can make choices on how they spend their money, house, cars, art, food, pleasures. At the end of the day. While I can understand the novelty of owning a fake watch (hence why i said i have one sitting on my counter) There are people out there (not saying you are one of them) who will use their fake rolex to impress girls or guys and convince others that they are something they are not for what ever reason. I don't judge them or stand on any higher moral ground to those who wish to spend their money on a cheaper watch. Afterall my favourite watch is also my cheapest, at $200 my seiko quartz has lasted me for over a decade and i've even gone to the trouble of polishing it and restoring it since it has been so good to me.

A cheap watch is not a bad watch! A fake watch however, has too many connotations attached to it for what its worth, you can get a good real watch for the price of a fake watch.

If you've found happiness and contentment in you choice of watch, i wont judge you for it. But the final word is: Even a good fake watch is still a fake.

If you want a nice looking watch for under 500 there are plenty around, i've offered many links and sources to designers that offer beautiful watches and i can name many more, timex, orient, a.b.art, citizen, wegner even the humble swatch. There are MANY good looking watches for under $500, but to spend that money on a fake watch which fuels organized crime and supports more knockoffs from china, tells me that sometimes, people are after something else rather than a "just" a watch. (once again, not saying any of you are like that )

so don't get me wrong, as a watch enthusiast, just like a car or motorcycle enthusiast, some things are just not justifiable to those who do not understand or have the appreciation. Try telling someone why an MV agusta is worth what it is when, a postie bike will get you around just as fine, the same applies to watches, some people just appreciate the finer details. And where theres money to spent. some people will gladly spend it on watches, MVs, paintings or cars.

    peace.

yeah, it's a minefield for the unwary.

I like them for the skill, the engineering and the craftsmanship. I prefer mechanical watches over quartz, and for the same reason love clear backs and skeleton watches, where you can see all the little bits going around and around.

I try not to get too wanky about it, I save that for beer
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.
