5 weeks 'til I move to Dubai for a few years. What gems do the psb travelers have for living abroad?

So far i've worked out the following financial requirements:

* If you're becoming non-resident for tax, tell your banks. They will apply a 10% withholding tax to any interest you earn. Real Estate agents will also apply a higher withholding tax to rental income.
* By being a non-resident there are many tax advantages with property investment, by renting out your property you can accrue tax CREDITS while you're gone.

As for the actual living overseas part:

* Don't stand out from the crowd too early, get to know the place/customs/rules before you start swinging naked off the chandelier.
* Even if your language skills are woeful like mine, pick up a few words of the local language, even if you get it wrong most locals appreciate you trying, inshallah!!!
* Male or female, don't get drunk in public or leave your drink unattended, worldwide this seems to be the main cause of assault/theft/worse against expats. Look after your mates.
* If she's taller than you, has big hands and an adam's apple, leave her alone.

Yeah get a 2nd passport if you can. will need a letter from employer and a bit of effort on your part but having that 2nd passport mean that when a dodgy Arab plutocrat tells you that he cannot get your passport back from some govt dept or another without a ‘clearance fee’ you can tell them to go jump.
