    MWTK: Dreadlocks

Been thinking about getting some dreads.

    Who has/had them?
Should I DIY or seek a stylist?
Any recommended hairstylists to get them started?
Any tips and tricks in regards to care?
    Got any horror stories?
Anything else that I should know before I get them?

i had them years ago and got them done by a stylist, but i also did a mates as well it is easy but takes ages, just get a small bunch of hair and back comb it till it is really small and then get some bees wax which you need to heat with a hair dryer and then pull that through the dreadlock, then use the hairdryer to melt the wax into the hair while twisting it, sounds complex but is easy when you get the hang of, not sure where in perth you can get it done. as far as looking after i was told not to get it wet for a year but i have straight hair, the ends needed redoing every so often. i liked the smell of them and they always gave me a comfy pillow to lay my head on!

Had them for a few years. If they do not occur naturally then yes they are high maintenance. Like chick hairstyle style. Once a month they need to be moved up or the look messy, well more messy.

I paid someone to do them and they took 8 hours to do, but they were pencil thin and my whole head. They usually shave the underneath or they start to stack up. Mine cost $500 a few years ago. You can do them yourself. Urban legend says a mix of washing up liquid, honey and other chunky stuff is the go, then separate the hair and knot it and tease it into dreads.

I got rid of mine when I went up north and it was fucking hot. They also started to clump up and I was just over them.

Oh yeah, had to buy two new helmets too as your head becomes a few sizes larger.

Saw a dude out the other night, he had mullet dreadlocks. Uber bogan.

They look good on Jason Mamoa (in Stargate Atlantis).

Are you 6'4", chisel jawed and bulging with muscles? Then give it a go. Otherwise, don't: it will make you look like a try-hard hippy wanker.

If you're going to do it, get it done properly.

I had them for about a year, now they're in a box at home somewhere.

Weird Sistas in Freo do a sterling job on dreads, that's all they do and they are bloody magicians at it. There's another place up north called Davey Jones, it's an ex weird sista that runs the place, she's also very good. Had her do maintenance on mine once and it was top notch.

They do require maintenance though, about every three months you will need to get the bases done.

You need to wash them with soap that doesn't contain any of the usual silicones that shampoo does. Also use something like lok up (which is a spray in a bottle) or alternatively, just go to the beach lots. When I was surfing every day I didn't need maintenance for about six months, but then it got cold and they got messy.

Oh yeah, and prepare to be discriminated against.

    Dreadlocks for a wedding? Interesting.
Is such a thing even possible?

    WTF? Ewww

Love dreads/braids in afro hair, hate them in Caucasian hair.

Always make you look just a tad desperate and try hard. They make more sense on skinny pale anemic hippies with pink fishermen's pants but that still doesn't make them look any good. I think they also make you only able to pick up chicks who wear hemp clothing, don't shave and have matching dreads.

Did you know there is a subgenre of porn devoted to hairy hippie chicks?

Is there anything that porn cant do?

I had started to inadvertantly grow dreads once, only because I had been away surfing and living rough for a month. The hair dressers that I went to on my return had a coin tossing comp to see who would have to wash and cut my hair. Yes, I used to have hair.
