OFWTK What relevance does Christmas have to you?

Call me a cynical miserable old bastard (comes with age) but unless you believe in biblical fairy tales, why do we go to great lengths and expense to celebrate the birth of someone the vast majority of us
have no interest in until the festive (piss up) season? Don't get me wrong I love watching the grandkids opening thier presents but goodwill to all men--pigs arse.

Christmas usually equates with family, and all that implies...

All I remember about christmas as a kid is when my dad's back got really bad and mum had to rush him to hospital...that and the dorky pyjama photos of us kids....But I do love christmas for my family. One extra year I get to see my granddad, how quickly my cousins are growing and how every year I feel different about it.
Biblically- it has no meaning to me. The best bit for christmas was always being the one who got to put the star on top of the tree!!!

Very good point Skut, I was being trivial but you have raised a far more important issue.
I do remember your post and often wonder how that affects the ones left to pick up the pieces.

Meh, Christmas is just another day, never been big in my family. It was my mate, who has since passed, birthday. It's the only day I actually visit his grave. We have a nicer place to go to remember him other times.

My mum does Christmas with my step family and if I do go it's usually only long enough to smash a plate full of food then leave. That's about all I can handle.

I usually take the boat out on the river by myself, it's great, always extremely quiet, get the whole place to myself. Then as a tradition all my close friends finish up family stuff in the arvo then we meet up for drinks. Good times.
I used to have a nice sig offering to shadow ppl. Now I have no sig...

I look forward to it now.
It's one of the few times I get to see the kids, without any suspicious questions being asked.

Perhaps it only has any meaning these days if you have kids....

Which is exactly what I implied by biblical fairy tales.
Adults should not need a date on a calender to make an effort to enjoy themselves.

    So Paul,
Does that mean you agree with the banning of Christmas carols and symbols in our schools?

Not at all Rob, it's a great time of year for kids, lets face it childhood doesn't last long these days and the longer they enjoy it the better.
I just think it's a bit ridiculous the way some adults approach a supposedly religious occasion when they show no interest any other time of the year.

No more hard questions please Rob

Personally, it's a time of the year I've always loved. Even if it's forced, I like a little bit of peace and goodwill in the world. I like the traditions, and I hope my children will continue them with their children, if they have them.

Professionally, it means I'll get 3 or4 phone calls on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day from people who aren't coping, or worse. I'll also spend a good part of January helping people to overcome the problems of spending time with their family. That's not always a good thing. I kind of like Ben Elton's observation about that: "There's a good reason I only want to see these people once a year, and I don't see why Christmas should be the day that gets fucked up by them."
"Once you can have people more frightened of disorder than tyranny, it enables you to do almost anything you like so far as legislation is concerned." Chief Judge Antoinette Kennedy, 26/3/2010.

"The State must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation." Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf

no relevance at all, glad to be on site to miss the drama that goes on and over zealous policing for the first week of the 'holiday period'

Means we get seafood dinner at work and free beer for the night

Xmas has never been that big for me. I don't have a big family here, so it's just a day to open presents, eat lots and then recover by sleeping it off in the afternoon. Usually it's a day that reminds me how far away my family really is. However, recently we have been doing "family" type gatherings with people from the same town as where my family's from (people who I grew up with) and I've really enjoyed that. Even though I'm not religious at all, I think Xmas is important as it gives us a time to have a big dinner with all the family and is one of the FEW things in Australia that we actually have a tradition for. Unfortunately I think our culture is too built around drinking, so this day kind of takes the focus away from that

It's that day that we're down half the crew because they are still drinking.
