OFWTK, Who likes our national anthem, should we change it?

Stealing an idea from C'pn Fish, Skut and Agrid.
Is our national anthem relevant in 2012? Do we have boundless plains to share?
No racist comments please. Keep it or change it?
Your thoughts please and Waltzing Matilda is not to be mentioned
Bonus points and a "like" to anybody who pens their own version.

I liked the following when I was at primary school.

    I love a sunburnt country,
    A land of sweeping plains,
    Of ragged mountain ranges,
    Of droughts and flooding rains.
    I love her far horizons,
    I love her jewel-sea,
    Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

to me, its like a dumb band name.

    eg U2.

the band is cool enough to define the name, so its then a cool name.

the song on its own is lame, but we kick ass in enuf sports, have built good memories on that tune, that it has become cool. IMO.

there is so much wrong with that, I barely know where to start...

I agree with agrid (yeah, go figure... ) putting some decent home-grown poetry to music is not a bad idea if they come up with a decent score. I don't mind the lyrics of the current, but the score sucks the big one.

I still find it ironic that verse two of Advance Australia Fair is so readily left out, I wonder if Howard was ever able to get through it?

Nah, I was being serious for once, Agrids got the right idea and that could be sung to the same tune, just add oh oh oh oh I'm an Australian after the 4th and 8th lines

I've always really liked the national anthem.

I remember when I was a kid from the UK where we had this stupid "God save the Queen" thing, and I much preferred the Sex Pistols version, but the Aussie national anthem always seemed so optimistic and full of spirit.

"Young & free - Boundless plains to share"

The whole message was about looking forward, about making something better than anywhere else because unlike the rest of the world Australia wasn't hung up on the past. Somewhere that welcomed you with open arms, with everything you could ever need if you were prepared to work for it.

Change the flag, ditch the Queen - but keep the anthem.

And thumbs down for Adams Hills' stupid version.

But verse two is so often skipped that many have never heard it. As I said, the lyrics are good, and certainly better than the old "God Save the Queen" (why the fuck should a Queen - and titular head of a Christian Church - need saving?) but the score is a bit of a dirge. But then so many anthems are. Perhaps by law it should be sung in full?

I'm with Teedo. The current anthem doesn't exactly move me. It's not something I feel proud of. It makes me quite jealous to see the obvious pride and passion that other countries have in their anthems. I don't know what to replace ours with, but I don't like the current one.

And those who think our national anthem is shit, not proud of it should possibly consider leaving these shores and going to somewhere they think is better.

Give it 5-10 years and almost everyone will have a criminal conviction of some kind. Well, everyone except new born babies but, by their second birthday they will have been caught farting in public, dragged off to court and convicted also.

Okay, And since you think we are such a nanny state, and we are being treated like criminals then you can consider leaving these shores too mate.
