    rgvWTK: alternatives to rollershutters?

So... looking at window treatments for the new place.

I've had experience with rollershutters, I reckon they are great at what they are intended for: keep out the light, help reduce noise, keeps the room cooler and to a lesser extent keeps the windows cleaner and can help stop the frames fading.

But there is the visual side of it, some people love them some hate the look. Personally I don't mind but the new place has 7 windows on the front elevation so there would be a lot of them. I don't necessarily want my house to look like a fortress but it's hard to go past the benefits that they give.

What other alternatives are there that offer similar benefits?

    what are you priorities?

    privacy?
    thermal?
    noise?

crimsafe screening or similar will give you protection and privacy...

other than that theres not a whole lot that will give you all of the above without looking like a prison.

I have the steel fly screens in current house and think they are great, can leave windows open when out and house gets a good airing but is very secure

ahk crimsafe may not work in that instance then...i don't think their suitable for awning windows...

might want to ring em and check though.

i think with your priorities, a combination of tinting, and possible some blinds might help?
its really hard to accomplish many of those with just a treatment to a window and without actually modifying the window itself, ie double glazed, low-e hush glass..

Shouldn't be an issue. Screen is mounted inside the glass, with a winder attachment inset through the mesh.

    Sheds.

Surround your house with them. Close to the windows, so there's room for air movement but no sunlight or criminal can breach the gap.

We have tinted security film on all windows. Provides a bit of piece-of-mind without the prison look. Pain in the butt initially as you have to re-bead the glass but it's a small price.
