RWTK: Are rep whores the new post whores?
Are they actually different? Or are post whores now a product of the repping system?
I've seen an overwhelming (I'm not *actually* overwhelmed) rise in bullshit posts that pander to opinion in search of rep. Frankly, I think it is pathetic.
My own 'rules of engagement' for rep are:
- ONLY give positive rep. Give it for something insightful and that 'adds value' to PSB. This way, a members 'value' will increase (not to be confused with popularity - fake or otherwise).
- Don't give or hide behind negative rep. Anything negative or questionable should be aired publically (if you have the minerals) or via PM, to at the very least, mount up for discussion.
It seems that people have their whiny little groups on here and they'll just follow each other around like flies on shit + repping each other (to the point they have to 'spread' their reputation) before sliding their ePeen back up their mate because they posted a picture of a fat dog.
The repping system is overlooked as being a tool for identifying members that are notable and valued in our community, and instead, is now 'almost' an indication of how big a tool that member is. (There are some exceptions to this but I'm noticing a trend.)
So, do you think the repping system has any merit, or is it feeding either the whores or 'little men' out there to look more important than they are and thus, diluting PSB of value?

I don't pay attention to it, I just give rep when the post is worth something to me.

i don't use it. never check my own and never give it out to people. I only once bothered to find out how to actually find what the hell it was.
Doesn't seem like much of a point to me. The rating system on the threads is slightly better especially in the members project area as you can see whats a good build.
But yes i'd say rep whores are the new post whores. And why do people say
"+rep given" the person who you gave it to knows so why tell everyone else?

I see at least one ducatisti fagacino sipping ponce that appears jealous over his sad, sad lack of rep...
To me, it's just giggles. People will always talk shit - the forum medium is used just like a group standing around a pub (ok, or a cafe by the bike parking). Sometimes the SNR is high, other times it's mostly noise.
Big deal - if I need information, I search for it anyway.
The rep/post count ratio is a pretty interesting though, especially amongst the top 30 or so posters...

If I read something *I* like, I give +ve rep, with a signed message. If I read something *I* don't like, I just ignore it. I feel that if the post is so bad it offends me THAT MUCH I can have other avenues of complaint - 'report post', PM or the little red X.

When have I even commented on my rep or lackthereof, the only time I have complained is when some wannabe redneck decided to call me a pedophile anoymously.
Srsly Captn, you have to figure out where the line is, and what you can and can't say to mates. You really do seem to take a lot of liberties with what you think you can say to mates.

*psst* There's other people here that ride Ducatis
edit: On Topic- I don't really care either way. If it's there, I'll use it as a laugh, if it disappears, it wouldn't bother me.
It's pretty easy to spot "valued" members.

I would like it if the little comments ala 'distinguished road' had more psb/bike relevent theme. Otherwise I think rep is just another way to keep the forum interesting and funny.
edit:I also think everyone should be able to see who's left them rep it would keep the system friendlier and people accountable for what they say. At the moment it seems easy to abuse.

same. If its funny, usefull or insightfull i'll give rep - not that ive got much to give.
Dont bother with negetive rep. Theres no point pissing people off and if you go around giving people bad rep cos of some insignificant comment you take the internet way too seriously.
Keep the system though- its good for a laugh especially when Mods (Jesus ) get involved

(dont tell him, just let this unfold )
Seriously though, rep is just a bit of fun, but I think it actually has reduced post-whoring now - you will not get rep for a post that has absolutely no relevance.
Negative rep is well used when someone gets a little bit upset that they dont have enough rep - to remind them that noone really cares anyway

I only +rep when it makes me laugh or I totally agree with the post. -rep is pointless IMO....seems a silly way to carry on like a 2 year old.

Or, and if a mod could maybe add this to the poll. 'Complete transparency'
So any member can go to another member's profile and see the rep that has been left for them. Like an eBay feedback thing. And yes, see who it is from.

I often rep people based on something they have done outside of the forum, ie, helped me out on a ride, or helped me fix something on my bike. It does not have to be based only on what they write in a particular post. Heaps of fantastic stuff goes on behind the scenes and leaving someone rep on even a fairly useless post is just another way of sayin thanks for something they have done, and yes, their value to the PSB community

No, this isn't so I can see who repped me. I don't give a shit (more on that later). But if ppl are using it to genuinely gauge a member's value (as has been indicated), it can help them decide whether they want to interact with them cos they can see what posts people thought were good, or bad etc.
And this is exactly the shit I'm talking about (I knew it wouldn't take long):
- Purely for the sake of irony and it shows how many sheep frequent the forums
- Take this neg, and wear it as a badge of honour, you convention snubbing rebel, you - withheld
- *IRONY* -
withheld.
I'm not in this for rep. I just want people to think for themselves and god forbid improve a feature and give it some meaning. But narrow minded ppl can't get past what they use it for and either attack me for bringing it up, or play the silly game I'm questioning.
Maybe I'm 'too old'.
Oh and Jess, that's exactly what I'm talking about! *falls to knees* "Someone sees!"
