    RWTK: Browsers and email programs

So I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to Windows 7. Still don't know if I'm going to regret it or not but it gives me a chance to change what I'm using to browser the interwebs and get my email.
So what I would like to know is what your using and what your opinion of whatever your using is

    Google Chrome as a browser.
Heaps quicker than IE and Firefox, and has a shit-hot sync feature, if you use multiple computers.

Another one for chrome as a browser. Way faster then IE (even 64 bit version), as well as firefox.

I use webmail, so I can't comment too much on the email program, but I used to use outlook because it was made available to me, and it seemed to work fairly well.

Chrome + Gmail to pull all my mail/contacts/calendar from various accounts into and allow multiple computer/device support. Using an email client with pop+smtp is gay.

Not a fan of Google in general but Firefox - my current browser - is getting more IE like (ie slower, bloatier and buggier) every release so I'll probably look at the switch before long.

The one thing in FF's favour at the moment is Firebug for development work.

I use the Apple mail program to handle mail, have my own domain and email gets hosted on that.

IE9 is "good enough" these days. (reasonably fast, has malware detection, has hardware accelerated rendering).

Using IE9 on windows means i only have ONE browser worth of security updates to patch. If you install another browser, thats 2 lots of holes - IE is used for heaps of rendering in windows internally anyway, so you need to patch it...

If you've just got Windows 7 and haven't upgraded IE yet, you're probably on IE8 which is a complete and utter piece of shit - run windows update and install any IE updates to double check...

    edit:
ugh, can't believe i'm recommending IE. But it isnt bad any more. Firefox is a lost basket-case. Chrome is decent, but there's a lot of stuff it does network wise i don't like.... update wise, web tracking wise, the integrated search/url bar, etc.

On the mac its safari all the way. I love the guestures, reader mode, the cover flow bookmarks, etc. But on Windows it freaks out the display driver from time to time and i get flickering window shit everywhere. So no go on windows...

64 bit version of IE is a waste of time. It doesn't have the updated javascript engine of the 32 bit version so it WILL be slower.

I like minimalist.. I used to use windows XP desktop as my web browser.
Now I use chrome with all the buttons hidden, just the tabs showing.

Email I always have and always will use online/webbased. I hate having to deal with the bullshit if you change ISPs or you format your computer having to copy all your emails, contacts etc over. As far as online email I did have a few accounts, but I recently imported them all into a couple of gmail accounts, again I like the no fuss, no eleventy-billion options and buttons idea.

The only time I used ISP based email in about 10 years is to sign up to PSB! Had to ring the ISP to get my password too.. grr

I'm using firefox for my webbing, and thunderbird for my mailing. Have been for years now, and I can't see any real reason to change...

Thro makes a good point. More browsers = more security holes so after a bit of reading and based somewhat on the opions here IE9 and Thunderbird it is.
    Thanks all for your time

On OS X, i love it.

No browser is perfect, but i like the gestures, cover flow bookmarks/history (i can see what i was looking for by what the page looks like without needing to remember its title), the lion version has process seperation, etc.

On windows - maybe. Depends on whether they fixed the annoying display driver crap with the early versions of 5. But see my argument for IE9 above... that goes for safari too (pro on os x, con on Windows).

In short, the set of cons to safari on OS X for me is preferable to the set of cons with firefox or chrome. I also prefer that safari has a seperate search bar, and isn't doing constant DNS/url lookups as i type into the address bar.

OSX / Safari after a couple days: I likey. Except that I can't get a magic mouse single click to close a tab (like in FireFox) and middle clicking on a bookmark group on the bar replaces the current tabs with the bookmarked pages rather than appending them.

That's odd, there's an x in the tab in Safari to close it or are you talking about some other way to click and close a tab? It doesn't appear until you hover over it. Weird thing is, that x disappeared for me for a couple of hours yesterday :/

At home, Opera+google hosted private domain.

I use IE9 at work (sharepoint likes it more then opera) and i am quite impressed with it, now if our ERP software supported something higher then IE7 id be a happy IT guy.

Tried running the site in compatibility mode?

    edit:
*fish: safari is better if you have a track pad. swipe left/right for forward/back... very nice... i got hooked on it with the macbook's trackpad so much i bought a magic trackpad to go with the full size keyboard when i'm at my desk

Murley, the X appears fine, it's what I'm using now. I've gotten (in FireFox) used to middle-clicking anywhere in the tab to close it, requires less coordination, and I am a little frustrated by nothing happening when I do this in Safari.

What for, it works most of the time in IE9, its only opera sometimes has a fit with it.

What browsers have spell check included (no plugin, extension, addon, or app)
