    RWTK: Manners

I had an interesting but short conversation with someone I work with a few weeks back. The subject of said conversation was whether it is excusable to be rude to some one if you give them a tip ($5 tip). In her opinion its ok for someone to be rude and tip you, however if they are just rude they wont get any service.

I have the opinion that if they are rude either way they will be avoided, regardless of how much they give. Is accepting a tip from someone who is rude an ok thing to do? Do you think its the right thing to do when there is so much of a fuss made about how rude people in society are? Should we be reinforcing bad social etiquette all in the name of a measly monetary reward.

Opinions would be handy, give reasons as to why it is or isn't ok.

Nope, a tip doesn't by you the right to make someone else's life less important than yours. A tip should be in recognition of above average (preferably excellent) service that you feels warrants some ex-gratia payment separate to their income. Some people are just extremely rude when not justified. Some people are frustrated and angry about something and this can often come across as rude to the face of the company the frustrated party is dealing with.

I've seen a waitress refuse a tip and let them know exactly why.
This guy was trying to bignote himself in front of a woman, and the waitress deflated him brilliantly.
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

Most of the people I work with do a below average job, they pick and choose who they serve based on weather they tip or not. No body I work with really does anything to deserve a tip or ex-grata payment as you put it. It does not motivate anyone to work harder, if they can score a $5 tip for walking maybe 10 meters and waiting for someone else to make their drink they will. In a sense its good economics, however its at the expense of good customer service and good morals.

Like fudge. Off topic here but it absolutely pisses me to tears to witness how some parents interact with their children. It's like swearing is a necessity in their vocabulary.
