Yapping here on the Enet is one thing.
Actualy helping people with a problem (on their bike or related to, outside the actual forum is in my little book a different and sometimes more constructive engagement.
Lots of this does go on completely unnoticed and so it should!

Of course that happens. I can see it myself. I think the rep thing is funny to be honest and should be treated as a bit of a laugh. It could be a tool for rewarding positive contributions Rhino, but there will always be those who reward bad behaviour too. I give rep out rarely - it has to have been a valuable post or made me laugh and with my twisted sense of humour, there are only a few people who make me laugh. In a lot of circumstances I can't give out rep when I want to because I place a high value on the posts of a few people, and I can't rep them as much as I'd like without spreading the rep around to other users. Is that the mentality you don't like? Possibly, and food for thought for me.
The only concern I have is that newbies will confuse a high rep level for a member of high standing and good advice. Because while some of the people with high rep are good people who will give good advice and help out a newbie... Some of them are those who'll just ridicule them (And probably get more good rep for doing it.) As long as the newbies aren't relying on these people alone, it's fine.
In general, I think those who get the mega good rep for the reasons you are concerned about are probably those who get the most negative rep too, so it will pretty much balance out.

But on a serious note. There are a lot of people in the PSB community that really do deserve big ups. Is there a voting poll for "good things done by PSB members?" then you could keep the reping as a bit of fun and still honour people for their help in the community. I know that people like Desmo, Big Tim, C'Starfish, barfy, Dingo, Nath and few more do a lot for people with in the group that a lot of people dont' even know about.. There are people within PSB that are some of the most kind hearted people I have ever had met.

This thread is such a heavy weight applied to a light subject. Rep is just another method for interacting with other members. Due to its nature there are different rules of engagement. You can be nice and show your face, you can be nasty and stay hidden, you can have real fun signing off your negative rep as somebody else .
For many people, including myself, the internet is a release from the everyday grind, somewhere to relax and have some fun. Don't be sad sad about life, it's only temporary

I'm looking at you Jesus!
Meh, i just find rep amusing. Anyone who uses rep for any sort of credibility or actual reputation measurement is shooting themselves in the foot.
Many clever people do not post much at all.
Read what people actually post and disagree/agree/have issue with that particular post - don't just blindly follow people's rep.
edit:
I agree with citd/tyson - i voted keep it for shits and giggles, that's all its useful for
I only give positive rep. If you've received rep from me, generally its because you made me laugh IRL.

There is merit on the one hand to opening it up for recipients to know who left 'em rep. But those special supporters gotta have something for their hundreds.
Personally I think even that should be removed - the protection of anonymity allows n00bs to tell uberEwangs that they are maybe not thought of so highly as they imagine without the threat of consequent flamage.
Given that there is some correlation between uberEwangs and platinum supporters, this veil of security is sadly missing where (in some cases) it would do an awful lot of good.
eBay style?
Dunno about rep being visible to all - has a plus side, in that I can see why Benjedo loves Cam so much, but it would radically impact the type of rep being left. Very different keeping it between you and me, and letting everyone know. Even more disincentive for n00bs to be negative repping the whores with their gaggle of gonads, even more incentive for the gonads to circle-rep.
Besides which, if I want to leave you rep that everyone can see, I have the whole forum in which to play that game. Except maybe in the MI section - coz I reckon that whiny little group might gang up on me big time...
